Lost in Space is an amazing reboot, and one of the best Netflix series to date.

There is not a more binge-worthy show on Netflix than Lost in Space. It weaves dramatic tension and perilous space travel into a family-friendly atmosphere. The drastic improvement over predecessors only underscores the overall quality of the series.

Similarly, fresh faces filling in for familiar characters further invigorates the series. The storyline expands upon the harrowing but singular prospect of being stranded in space, and fully fleshes out a complex environment and cast. They’re not just castaways anymore. They’re prospective Alpha Centauri colonists, and unlike other stranded-in-space stories, there isn’t a botanist to “science the sh** out of it.”

It’s easily one of the best offerings on Netflix

Let’s get this out of the way. It’s better than Altered Carbon, GLOW, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil. The other show you’re thinking of? Better than that, too, unless you happened to think of Stranger Things.

Lost in Space is more than explosions, danger, and survival. Sure, it’s all of that, but the production value is excellent, the action is intense, and there is never tranquil stillness. The cast is perpetually blitzed with issues, which is apropos for their situation. After all, there likely isn’t time for a lot of relationship-building or exploration when aliens, monsters, fuel shortages, and return-mission logistics are on the daily itinerary.

Additionally, it’s PG. Real depth is difficult to attain while walking the universal, family friendly tight-wire. Lost in Space, however, manages the difficult balance deftly.

All of the aforementioned speaks to the brilliance of Lost in Space. Voluminous, complex scale allows the series unfettered potential.

Can being lost in space be what carries a show? Can that be it? Or is there greater meaning and purpose? Being lost in space could be individually based. Geography is not the only way one can be lost. Indeed, relying simply on “We’re lost and want to go home,” only works so well unless you have aforementioned potato-growing-botanist, or a Kansan ingenue with a dog and red slippers.

The cast is incredible

Lost in Space‘s true home-run is the casting and acting.

There is no way Maxwell Jenkins is 12 years old. If he’s 12, then Danny Almonte was of legal age for the Little League World Series. He’s not even a teenager yet! Moreover, there were multiple scenes he just absolutely carried everything like a 4’11” Atlas. Additionally, Taylor Russell and Mina Sundwall are revelations as Judy and Penny, respectively. I’d swear they’ve known one another for years. Their sibling relationship is palpable.

Perhaps most striking is Parker Posey as pseudo Dr. Smith. Each and every time she enters a scene, the collective cringe and hate from all Netflix viewers is nearly symbiotic. There hasn’t been a more hated character since Joffrey on Game of Thrones.

The robot upgrade can’t be stressed enough.

This is not your grandfather’s robot. What was once a few light bulbs and drain spouts hooked up to a vacuum cleaner, eventually turned into a souped-up, laser shooting Segway. Both pale in comparison to a deadly, shape-shifting alien. Let’s face it, a deadly alien robot is so much more intense and terrifying than its predecessors. Furthermore, the script can now expand far beyond beep-boop-beep and flailing of the wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man. Now, there is the lethal balance of an automaton King Kong, soothed only by a pint-sized ringmaster.

The bond between robot and Will is an amazing and inspiring addition. As the robot and Will spend more time together, there is a complex cultivation of the robot’s humanity. It’s not just a boy teaching his pet robot tricks or hip Tex-Mex colloquialisms. This is a “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra“-level of communication between alien species.

As far as Netflix shows go, I believe Lost in Space is one of the best. Lost in Space has everything, and there should be multiple future seasons. It’s incredible. Long story short, Lost in Space is worth the effort. Set aside a few hours. Pop some popcorn. You won’t be disappointed.

Lost in Space is currently available to binge on Netflix.
