The competition is fully on, as the once friendly alliances are now broken, and the competition between the crews is no longer friendly.

This week, in the third episode of the Deadliest Catch, Season 14, entitled Dead in the Water, the captains are competing to fill up their crab tanks, and beating the rest of the fleet to the crab.

Last week, surprising new alliances were made, while loyalties were challenged on the Deadliest Catch. Feeling that he was helping a younger version of himself, Captain Keith Colburn paired up with former Sig Hansen protege Captain Jake Anderson, helping each other amass their crab totals. Yet, but doing so, Jake was leaving his mentor out in the cold.

Fans of the Discovery show were certainly concerned that the Northwestern captain would have another heart attack when the surly captain expressed his anger when Jake failed to answer his calls. But Sig was fuming even more, lighting cigarette after cigarette, when he realized his former deckhand was now partnered up with the Wizard captain.

Deadliest Catch captains Josh Harris and Sean Dwyer form an alliance

Cornelia Marie co-captains Josh and Casey McManus found some early success in finding the crab, but their luck ran out. They decide to form an alliance with Brenna A captain, Sean Dwyer. They decide that each boat will check out different areas, and then determine where the good fishing is.

After finding that their spot wasn’t so good, Casey tried to radio Sean. The scene shifted to Sean, who didn’t answer, and told the cameras that he didn’t want to share information with them. He appeared sure that Casey and Josh would share that piece of information with the whole fleet, and Sean would have none of that.

Back on the Cornelia Marie, it was clear to Casey what happened, and both he and Josh were absolutely furious that Sean betrayed them. A veteran, Casey was sure that no one else on the fleet would ever help Sean again, no matter how desperate he was.

Clearly, Captain Josh Harris discovered that his chaotic year off from fishing to deal with family issues may have been easy compared to the broken trust he experienced with Brenna A captain, Sean Dwyer. This is a lesson that the young captain will never forget.

Jake Anderson’s alliance with Captain Keith goes sour

Sensitive Saga captain, Jake Anderson found that last week’s alliance with the Wizard’s captain brought in the crab, but Captain Keith’s methods seemed to confuse him. With every piece of advice that Keith gave Jake, Keith gave him a lesson in crab fishing.

This all went over Jake’s brain, and when he didn’t get the crab he was told he would find, he thought that Keith was making fun of him, and he laid into him, permanently destroying this short-lived alliance.

Wild Bill’s luck begins to change

Captain Bill Wichrowski started out the season by ceremoniously losing 20 percent of his quota when Sean “poached” it right from under his nose. The two had a friendly competition to determine whose crew could lay down pots faster, and Wild Bill showed the Brenna A captain who was was king of the Bering Sea. Yet, his start this season was slow to getting to the crab, but his loyal crew stuck with him though his own personal doubts that he could make his quotas.

The veteran captain of the Summer Breeze once again enlisted the help of crab callers to get him to the crab. Last year, the electronic devices failed, but this season, they worked beautifully and helped him succeed. His first pot pulled in over 60 crabs, which certainly lifted the spirits of the frustrated captain, ending the episode in a positive way.
