Hope Mikaelson has become one of the stars for The Originals Season 5, but she’s turning me off the season already.

I’m going to put it out there. I really dislike Hope Mikaelson in The Originals Season 5. In fact, I may actually hate her and I don’t use that word often: hate is just such a strong word. My big problem is, I’m not even sure if we’re supposed to like Hope or not. It’s not clear whether she’s going to end up being a villain, an anti-hero like her father, uncles and aunts, or the savior of the world.

If it’s the latter, well I’m certainly out for the next spin-off if that comes to fruition. I’m not sitting through a series with a bratty teenager. I’ve watched enough CW shows with that sort of character and I’m genuinely done.

Right now, I’m trying to push past my dislike for Hope because of my love for so many of the other characters. Elijah is by far my favorite (and I’m disappointed he wasn’t in the last episode) with Marcel a very close second. I adore Rebekah and Freya and there is something about Kol and Klaus that make them likable past the bad boy vibe.

But I really am struggling to get past my dislike for Hope. Here are the five reasons I just can’t stand her.

#1. She’s a bratty teenager

This should be the obvious one, but it’s not just the fact that she’s bratty. It’s yet another show with a teen that has parental issues. In her case, it’s the issue that she hasn’t seen her dad in years. When she does see him, she ignores all the warning signs that tell them both they shouldn’t be in the same room together (a reason directly linking to that coming up).

Hope acts like the world owes her everything. And on top of that, Freya plays it off like a normal teenage witch tantrum. I get the feeling I would have disliked Freya if we saw her as a teenager at any point.

The attitude Hope has is one of the reasons I actually didn’t like Rebekah and Klaus at first. They acted like spoilt children, but they grew up. I just can’t see Hope doing that any time soon.

#2. She’s selfish

If she isn’t just being a brat, she’s being a selfish one. See, I told you there’d be a reason directly linking to her actions.

Hope literally kidnapped her own mother just so she could get her dad back in town. She created panic for the sake of her own selfish feelings. When she could hear the whispers, she refused to accept that Klaus had to stay away. Out of all the people to do that, I expected it to be Klaus!

The only reason she told Klaus to leave was because of the direct pain and sickness she felt. Nobody else mattered.

#3. She’s eye-rollingly dull

Past the brattiness, there’s not much going for this character. Despite the fact that I didn’t like Klaus and Rebekah at first, there was something about them that made me want to know more. I still to this day can’t figure out what it was, but there was an allure to the two of them. And knowing Elijah was their brother certainly helped. Oh, and they were the villains at the time, so we were meant to dislike them.

With Hope, I don’t see any of that and she’s supposed to be liked, right? She’s currently this two-dimensional character that it’s like The Originals writers haven’t fully thought about what to create with her. And it’s a shame because they’ve had plenty of time and there’s no changing things now.

Sure, Hope has some growing up to do, but even then she’d have some sort of personality. Right now, there’s nothing to make me want to watch her.

#4. She offers little

Apart from kidnapping her mom, so far Hope has offered very little in terms of deep storyline. Okay, so she sold her blood to turn a werewolf into a vampire, but that storyline is now over. Hope has caused more pain in the first two episodes than Elena Gilbert did when she turned off her emotions in The Vampire Diaries. Okay, maybe that’s not quite true, but watching it certainly feels that way.

I will admit that we’re only in the first two episodes of The Originals Season 5. There’s a chance that she’ll become more crucial to the storyline (and not just the link to the Hollow), but right now, she doesn’t offer enough to make the brattiness worthwhile.

I miss the little girl that we had. Hope in The Originals Season 4 had so much potential from the beginning. This season I don’t see it, and I went in keeping an open mind despite knowing how The CW tends to handle teenage characters.

If the writers want to make her the most hated protagonist at the start to create a redemption arc, then they’ve started right. However, it’s going to take a lot to believe a redemption arc right now. And maybe it doesn’t help that I want Klaroline to happen after all these years of waiting for it and Elijah to come back on my screen!
