Isaiah Mustafa dishes on how Ollie’s possession will affect Luke, why he and Simon make great partners, and Luke/Maryse flirting. And yes, he knows Luke could wind up being (almost) everyone’s dad on Shadowhunters season 3.

At the end of last week’s Shadowhunters episode, we watched as The Owl chose Ollie as his final mundane to possess, completing his mission for Lilith and taking Ollie as the 33rd disciple. Though Luke was unsuccessful in trying to stop Jace/The Owl from escaping, finding Ollie and protecting the people in her life will become his main priority. With Simon along for the adventure, we’ll see Luke utilize his knowledge as a detective and Shadow World leader to try and uncover what’s really going on at the Church of Talto.

We caught up with Isaiah Mustafa this week to learn more about Luke’s plan in Shadowhunters season 3 episode 7 and to break down that flirtatious moment between Luke and Maryse in last week’s episode (and what it could mean for their relationship moving forward).

Hidden Remote: At the end of the last episode, we saw The Owl take Ollie as the 33rd disciple. How is Ollie’s possession going to affect Luke in this week’s episode?

Isaiah: I think it’s pretty much going to galvanize his resolve to just get this thing done. He doesn’t want any of his people — his people being Simon, Clary, and now Ollie — to get hurt or for anything to happen to them. He’s very protective. So now that she’s been taken, I think all bets are off. I think he’s like, ‘Nope. We’re going for it. I’m going to put the peddle to the metal on this one.'”

Hidden Remote: We’ve seen from the released photos that Luke and Simon are going to the Church of Talto together. Is Simon going to be Luke’s supernatural shield, or is there another reason these two could be working together?

Isaiah: I think what you said with ‘supernatural shield’ would be the most accurate description of what Simon is right now. I think Luke is smart enough to know that with Simon’s ability and with what Simon’s got going on, that he’s a valuable asset when it comes to hunting down this demon. If she does what everyone else has been doing and attacks him, she’ll be destroyed. He’s knows he’s got that kind of ace in his pocket.

Hidden Remote: And I love Luke’s role as a mentor and father-figure on the series, as we all do. Are we going to see Luke and Simon bond more in this episode?

Isaiah: Yeah, you’ll definitely see those guys get together on a very partner kind of level. I feel like they would love to do more. I almost feel like Simon would love to be Luke’s partner all the time because that would keep him safe [laughs].

He would be able to ask questions and get answers without the looks he gets from the Shadowhunters when he asks ‘What’s this?’ and they look at him like ‘What? You’re stupid,’ but he’s like ‘Well, I don’t know! I’m not in this world. You have to explain it to me.’ I think Luke has the patience to actually explain it to him, so Simon would appreciate that.

Hidden Remote: Switching gears here, I think the entire fandom is on board with Luke and Maryse developing a relationship together.

Isaiah: Really? Oh, good. I’m glad because there’s going to be a lot more of that.

Hidden Remote: So we are going to see more moments between Luke and Maryse this season?

Isaiah: I think you’ll definitely see more interaction. Where it goes? You’ll have to watch and see, but you’ll definitely see more interaction. I think that because of their connected pasts, they’ll be able to help each other in different ways. Luke’s already expressed that by saying, ‘Hey, I’ve been where you are, and I’m here, and by the way, you look nice without those runes.’ So, a little flirtation goes a long way.

More from Teen Dramas

Because before, the last time he saw her in the Institute it was all the Downworld business, and he just didn’t think anyone else would try to kill Valentine [laughs]. He just didn’t have time to stop and chat with Maryse that last time. So now it’s in a much more festive setting at The Hunter’s Moon and he’s able to kind of sit down and be like ‘Ok, look. All that stuff we had? It’s water under the bridge. If you need somebody to talk to, I’m here for you.'”

Hidden Remote: I also wanted to see if you had a preferred ship name because I’ve seen about a dozen different names. I think I’ve seen Maruke, Marcian, Laryse, Luciaryse, Lightway, LukeMaryse as one word…

Isaiah: Lightway?!

Hidden Remote: Yeah! And the list goes on. So I wanted to see if you had a favorite, or if a decision has been made?

Isaiah: Umm, I think one of our showrunners, Todd, threw one out there. I think he said Laryse. I think that’s the one he was going with… I’ll keep it in the family and say Laryse [laughs].

Hidden Remote: And if Luke and Maryse did eventually get together, would Luke become almost everyone’s dad?

Isaiah: I think he would be everyone’s dad, yeah. Literally everyone’s dad on the show. Let me think. Whose dad would he not be? Nope. Everyone. Well maybe except for Raphael. He’s the only person he wouldn’t be the de facto father to. Let’s see. Maia? Check. Simon? Check. Clary? Check. Lightwoods? Yeah. Everybody.
