This week, on the Deadliest Catch season 14, episode 4, the captains face mistakes and injuries.

No one said that fishing on the Bering Sea was an easy job, as the Deadliest Catch captains deal with injuries and crew mistakes that cost them valuable time ,as they try to fill their tanks with crab in the episode entitled “Salt Wounds.”

Last week, the friendly alliances were broken, as the Cornelia Marie co-captains Jake Harris and Casey McManus were burned by their short-lived partnership with Brenna A captain, Sean Dwyer.

Captain Keith Colburn tried to help out Saga captain Jake Anderson, by teaching him patience, yet The Wizard captain got fed up with Jake’s emotional roller coaster ride and bailed.

Meanwhile, Northwestern captain Sig Hansen is second guessed by his brother Edgar, as the crew questions why he moved from hot fishing, and now bring up empty pots. Did Captain Sig redeem himself this week?

Captain Keith’s frustrations mount

Although the Wizard captain is happy to be on the crab, already dropping off a boatful at Dutch, Keith Colburn isn’t feeling too good. He heads to the doctor for some tests. The only problem is that they still have a quota to make, and they must turnaround as soon as they offload. Thus, a concerned Keith won’t get the diagnosis from the doctor before the Wizard leaves Dutch.

An exhausted-looking Keith has his brother Monte take the wheel, while he tries to rest, hoping that a good sojourn will heal him. Unfortunately, Mouse immediately has some serious issues once Keith’s head hits the pillow.

First, there is a fuel leak because the boat was over-fueled at Dutch. Thankfully, it is contained to only the engine room, and nothing contaminated the Bering Sea, which would mean environmental issues, and other hassles.

Then, the younger Colburn drops pots down into the wrong spots, because Monte failed to consider weather in his calculations. When a groggy Keith awakens and realizes this mistake, he is absolutely furious.  The two battle it out like in the old days, and Keith kicks Mouse out of the wheelhouse.

The Cornelia Marie captains decide crew more important than fishing

The Deadliest Catch crew can suffer a lot of injuries thought out the season, and the harsh waves have forced the Cornelia Marie co-captains to make some tough decisions.

First of all, Taylor their greenhorn suffers a knee injury because the boat moved awkwardly through the sea, which is not that unusual. The greenhorn job is the worst job on the crew, and the Cornelia Marie clearly picked up a tough customer, as Taylor still wants to tough it out, though clearly in pain.

Casey and Josh check out Taylor’s injury and he clearly cannot put his full body weight on his knee. The captains are concerned with what looks like fluid around the knee. They wonder if they should give up fishing and take him back to Dutch for medical care. That decision is quickly made as another deckhand hurts his hand. The captains decide to sacrifice their quota, and head back to Dutch Harbor to take care of their crew.

Captain Sig redeems himself

Sig Hansen started out the season by kicking out Jake from the wheelhouse. He had insinuated he was a “radio” fisherman, seeking help by asking around the fleet. Sig started out the season strong, but left good fishing because he didn’t want to compete against other crews. He then spent an episode unsuccessfully seeking new grounds in order to fill his always-stressful quota.

This week, the surly Northwestern captain boldly moved the boat more north than any of the other crews. Sig had a hunch that the crab were rapidly moving in that direction.

After using up expensive resources such as time and fuel, he drops a test pot to soak, in order to see if his crab catching radar is working. Then, the joyous crew pulls up a full pot, restoring the captain’s faith in himself. Now Sig hopes that the rest of the fleet stay away until the Northwestern fills their quota and heads back to Dutch Harbor.
