Roseanne meets her neighbors, while DJ finds life is harder than expected.

Roseanne can’t help spying on her Muslim neighbors this week. When Jackie catches her in the act, she feels a garden rake is adequate protection. Rosie is worried that because of an overflow of fertilizer on their lawn, they are planning an attack on the whole neighborhood.

After some logic falls into the head, Roseanne walks through the kitchen to put the rake away where she sees her old friend Chuck and needs to tell Dan about her finding. “Our new neighbors have way too much fertilizer.” It’s so random that Dan explains: “After 45-years of marriage you run out of things to talk about.”

D.J. comes in with Mary. He needs mom to babysit so that he can go and wait at the VA overnight for an appointment. He also knows that it’s the night that Mary needs to speak to her mom Geena. At a ripe time of 2:00 am or 0200 as Mary explains.

Meanwhile, Roseanne and crew are having a tent party in the living room. They are waiting for the 2:00 am Skype call with Geena. Unfortunately, since Dan lost the job there is no money in the bank, and the internet is shut off. The only thing Roseanne can do is borrow their neighbor’s WiFi. At 2:00 am.

Fortunately, for them, the Muslim neighbors a husband (Samir) and wife (Fatima) are kind enough to loan it to them. The following day, Roseanne runs into Fatima at the grocery store checkout counter. Fatima hands the cashier her EBT card, but there are insufficient funds. “Maybe the American taxpayers forgot to fill it up,” the checkout girl quips.

Roseanne then uses her EBT card to pay for the rest of Fatima’s, and the checkout girl responds with a bigoted statement: “Maybe you can help her carry her groceries out to her camel, too.” Fatima exits, and Roseanne gives the cashier a piece of her mind:

"“You’re ignorant. That woman is twice the person you’ll ever be, and she’s dealing with a lot of stuff that you don’t even know about. So next time she comes into the store, you keep your mouth shut. She has enough fertilizer to turn this place into a smoking hole in the ground.”"

That night Samir returns Roseanne’s money. The timing may be off just a tad as Sahir rings the doorbell repeatedly until Rosie gets to the door. “Did you have to bring it back at two in the morning?” Samir responds with “Oh yes!”

Notes:

  • D.J. meets up with Dan and lets him know that even though he is healthy physically, he is struggling mentally with being in Syria.
  • Geena is the same girl who D.J. refuses to kiss while growing up. Sometimes destiny works like that.
  • D.J. and Dan decide to start fixing bikes for a little extra cash.

Rating: 5/5

Its an amazing piece of work when writers can show racism from all sides and a tragedy (PTSD) facing military men coming home from war.
