Despite Star Wars’ huge following, fans have been mum about Solo and their excitement. Does it prove we don’t want or need a film about Han Solo?

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, no one imagined what would happen. Disney has a knack for putting magic on something and then recreating that magic. The same can be said about their treatment of Star Wars. The franchise has gotten bigger and bolder since Disney took over.

One project has gone under the radar and that’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. The second in a line of anthology films, Solo is incredibly underrated. It begs the question: Do we truly need or want a Han Solo film?

There’s no simple answer to that question as everyone has a different opinion. For the most part, fans are meh about the movie. The film hasn’t even been released yet and has had major problems especially with directors. With such an impassioned and excitable fanbase, why is everyone trashing Solo?

An argument can be made about the lack of Harrison Ford. That’s understandable as he is and always will be Han to some. It’s the same argument that came up when the prequels and new films were being produced. However, Alden Ehrenreich isn’t trying to replace Harrison Ford and he never will.

The other argument fans can make is the film won’t be canon. Star Wars has such a huge canon so it’s unlikely everyone will fit together perfectly. The franchise now includes TV shows, comic books and fiction books. Not everything is going to match up perfectly.

The last argument fans can make is they don’t want a film based on Han Solo. This argument is incredibly valid as Han does have an air of mystery about him. He’s a morally grey character and we love him for it. Learning more about him isn’t going to take that away from him, though.

Ultimately, it comes down to preferences. Some fans will never watch Solo while some will watch it and hate it while others will love it. Bashing Solo before its release is just stupid, but that’s how any fandom is.

Personally, I think Solo is a great idea. We not only get more Star Wars but get to learn more about Han, who he is and how he became the man we know. Han is an incredibly beloved character so learning more about him should be what fans want.

Answering that question isn’t easy, because no, we don’t need this movie. There are some fans who want it and some who don’t. Trashing Solo doesn’t make you any more of a fan than someone who loves it. Hopefully, the film is successful and will warrant more anthology films in the future.
