Bob’s Burgers: Interview with Bob’s Burgers podcast, Pod’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers has a relatively small podcast presence and one of its newest is Pod’s Burgers. The ladies sat down to talk Bob’s, podcasting and much more.
Bob’s Burgers is easily one of the most underrated cartoon shows. With that comes the territory of a lack of almost everything. In the media, there are few who write about the show, cover each episode and a sore lack of fan art, merchandise and podcasts.
However, there are a handful of quality podcasts out there. One of the newest is Pod’s Burgers, created by Jen and Briddany Land. Known as the Land Sisters, the two have crafted a new and exciting place in the fandom.
Since I’m such a big fan and supporter of Bob’s Burgers, I knew I had to talk to them. Hopefully, this will kick off a new series of interviews with Bob’s Burgers podcasters. If you’re interested in listening, you can check out their official Facebook page, website and iTunes. I’d like to thank the ladies of Pod’s Burgers for talking to me, being really cool and generally creating this podcast!
Hidden Remote: How do you decide what you’re going to talk about each episode?
Jen: I spend about 47 minutes of every hour thinking about Bob’s Burgers, so generally Briddany agrees to talk about whatever is bouncing around inside my head during that period of time. Where possible we tie it to a holiday or event, and we want to get better about talking about the latest episode but damn…there’s so much material and so many angles you can go with when it comes to Bob’s. I feel like we could talk about the same episode twenty times and still have a fresh take with no repeats of content.
Briddany: It can sometimes be a challenge, mainly due to the fact that there is SO MUCH good material to discuss! Right off the bat, we went for theme episodes, and also focusing on each of the characters. We lean toward favorite episodes, and I find myself referring back to those favorites in other podcasts, too. And I tend to defer to Jen to choose the specific episodes we discuss because she is, and will always be, The Qweeeeeen BB (that’s Bob’s Burgers, in case it’s not obvious…I know, I’m an idiot, and it’s part of my charm)
Hidden Remote: Who or what originally influenced you to start a Bob’s Burgers podcast?
Briddany: All Jen, all the time. I remember the first time she texted me and demanded that I start watching Bob’s Burgers. It was a crisp spring day, I was thinking of pasta as usual, and my hair had been freshly dyed and my eyebrows recently waxed. I felt good. Real good. Little did I know, it was only to get better…

Jen really is the genesis here. When she decides to get into something, she puts all of everything into it. She contacted me to say, “Let’s do a podcast!” or rather “WE’RE GOING TO DO A PODCAST” and so here we are. Honestly, it didn’t take much convincing. I love drinking wine, and I love talking with Jen, and I love talking in general.
The idea for the Bob’s Burgers podcast specifically came from Chris the Archivist, though. We had a few ideas for other podcasts—and we started a podcast for one of the other ideas, too: Mostly True. You should check it out. But we wanted something really solid to get our bearings in the podcast world, and now here we are: babbling delightfully into your earholes.
Jen: So Bob’s Burgers is essentially my religion. I talk about Bob’s every chance I get and to paraphase Cady from Mean Girls, when I’m not talking about Bob’s Burgers, I’m just waiting for a chance to talk about Bob’s Burgers again.
Briddany and I are best friends and she tolerates my weird ideas so all this means it seemed natural to put together some kind of tribute/outlet for that level of obsession. And let’s be real – chugging wine while babbling into a mic for a couple hours is way easier than chugging wine and turning out any other kind of artistic tribute. Although I don’t know if this is art. But the wine part is a definite. So we have that going for us.
Hidden Remote: You’re one of few females who run Bob’s Burgers podcasts. Why do you think there are so few ladies talking about the show?
Jen: That’s such an interesting observation, I have to admit I hadn’t noticed that before (and not just because I don’t listen to other Bob’s podcasts…more on that in a minute). That’s odd. I don’t really know – I will say that the hosts of my favorite, non-Bob’s podcast (other than our own) watch Bob’s, and it delights me every. single. time. they talk about it (again, more about that in a minute).
Briddany: Personally, I think there aren’t many women who “watch cartoons.” In fact, that’s something that Jen has said surprised her about being so into Bob’s Burgers—she just doesn’t dig animated shows. What’s interesting is that there is SO MUCH for everyone in Bob’s Burgers, so women could and should be way more into it, if they gave it a try. COME ON, LADIES. WE’RE LOOKIN’ AT YOU.
Hidden Remote: What’s one issue you two run into when discussing the show together?
Briddany: We haven’t had many issues so far, honestly. Except that one time I was sick and watched the wrong episode for the Rank-sicals podcast. And there is always the fact that there is SO MUCH to say that editing done to a reasonable length can be a bit of a chore (great job, Jen!).
Jen: Honestly, we gel pretty well together so I think the main thing we struggle with is everyday life devouring our time so we’re not great at getting episodes out on a regular cadence. We need to get to a point where we can record them on a regular schedule and then I can edit them in a decent amount of time.
Our day jobs are crazy busy and we both tend to overschedule ourselves, so it is tough. And! Add to that the fact that we have TWO podcasts because we are masochists. But we love doing it. We love all of it. So we can’t stop. We won’t stop. We subscribe to the Miley Cyrus school of…whatever. Life. Doing too much stuff.
Hidden Remote: Since you don’t listen to other Bob’s Burgers podcasts (from what I’ve heard lol!), can you give any recommendations for other podcasts?
Jen: Okay so. I did say (in episode one, was it?) that I refused to listen to other Bob’s podcasts, but since then I’ve actually caught a few Bob’s podcasts that I really dig. Because come on, solidarity in the love of Bob’s, amirite? I am partial to Lettuce Ketchup because it feels like a conversation with a couple of fans and I like the tangents they can go on. Because I am a huge fan of tangents. And Briddany is a huge fan of making me stop going off on them. We’re a good pair.
A non-Bob’s podcast I’m completely taken with is My Favorite Murder – the hosts are Bob’s fans, come ON. I am utter fangirl about Karen and Georgia and I’m almost as obsessed with true crime and murder as I am with Bob’s, so…kismet? Did I use that right?
And, of course, I love our other podcast, Mostly True. I wouldn’t be a marketing professional if I didn’t mention that. Sorry. Sort of.
Briddany: We’d love for you to listen to our other podcast, of course: Mostly True. It’s all original content and all about storytelling. We have guests on that show, and the stories are all fun and interesting and touching. Somehow we always end up talking about murder, too. We’re morbid, I guess.
But speaking of that: I listen to My Favorite Murder, as well. And The Geekshow Podcast, which is a podcast local to Salt Lake City, and they discuss comics, books, movies, etc.
HIdden Remote: Have you watched the latest episode, “Are You There Bob? It’s Me, Birthday”? If so, what were your thoughts on it?
Note: At the time of questioning, “Are you There Bob? It’s Me, Birthday” had just aired.
Briddany: I am…SO BEHIND on watching the latest season. I’d blame moving, but I hate excuses, and I think Louise should be allowed to take clever, twisted revenge on me for not giving the proper attention to her.
Jen: Of course I have! Oh hell, I loved it so much. I feel like the show has really hit its stride this season. I can honestly say there isn’t a single episode in the entire run – all seasons – that I don’t like. But there are episodes that I don’t watch 60-100 times, it’s more like 15-30. There are no episodes so far this season that fall into the latter camp there. I adore all of them. This one did that thing I generally don’t like – split the family up – but it worked so well for this storyline.
The dynamic between Bob and Hugo was perfect. Bob’s vomiting sounds were realistic and horrifying and hilarious. Linda’s frenetic party-planning was so close to home for me, but in the best possible way. And Gene’s hair. GENE’S HAIR. I can’t. I die.
Hidden Remote: Which of the Belchers do you think would listen to your podcast?
Briddany: I think Gene and Linda would listen together. And probably Teddy would listen and then they’d all come together to discuss. Gene would be particularly into it, in his trademark Gene way. That is: providing fervent and confusing non sequiturs and references to bodily functions. I love Gene SO MUCH, you guys.
Jen: I think Tina. Without a doubt. Linda and Bob wouldn’t understand what a podcast is (please refer to Linda’s questions re: Dame Judy Brunch’s blog: “Do I, uh I blog dot net or something? Or I just print it out? Or what do I do?” and Bob’s flip phone and 90’s era video camera), Gene doesn’t have the attention span to sit through an entire episode, and there’s not nearly enough mayhem to keep Louise happy.
But Tina! She’d love our ability to strip things down to the emotional studs and beams. She’d appreciate that we said “studs” and “beams.” She’d like the parts where we go off script into weird and sometimes inappropriate territory. She’d live vicariously through Briddany’s effs. She’d tell everyone about the podcast, even if they actively didn’t care to hear about it. She’s, like, our perfect listener.
Hidden Remote: If you could write Erotic Friend Fiction about one TV show or movie, what would you perv up?
Briddany: Oh, wow. I feel like I’m too weird to really pull of perving anything up with much success, but if I had to choose, I’d probably go with Dragon Ball Z, mainly because Chris the Archivist would be delighted and horrified. But anime is already kind of pervy anyway, and Dragon Ball is already just LOUSY with the grunting and screaming, I’d probably just cut out all dialog and focus on that.
Honestly, though: maybe I’d go with a reality cooking show. Top Chef or something. I’d make it from the perspective of the ingredients. Like, a forbidden romance between refrigerated and hot foods. Or some freaky Fry Sauce action. FOR SERIOUS WHY AM I SO UNRELENTINGLY WEIRD.
Jen: Cosmos. Obviously. The old one, from the 70s.
Hidden Remote: What’s one unique piece of Bob’s Burgers merchandise you own?
Briddany: I actually don’t own any Bob’s Burgers merchandise because when I find stuff, I get them as prezzies for Jen.
If could have anything, though, it would be Jericho related. Like, a statuette or an autographed poster. Jericho is the shit.
Next: Bob's Burgers: Boywatch is the Belcher family at their best
Jen: Briddany purchased a one-of-a-kind fan sketch of the family for me as a gift a couple of years ago. It’s weird and adorable and perfect. It hangs in my office at work. And then, of course, there’s the Bob’s encyclopedia that lives in my head.
Hidden Remote: Can you give us a preview of any future episodes or episode ideas we can look forward to?
Jen: We have been talking about doing an episode about Teddy pretty soon. We adore him, he reminds us of our brother. We also need to get caught up on talking about the episodes this season because like I said, incredible. In particular I can’t wait to talk about Sleeping with the Frenemy – watching Bob doing Tammy’s hair was basically a religious experience for me.
Briddany: DEFINITELY need to put out a Teddy-themed episode. Teddy makes me laugh far more than it probably normal.
And I’d like for us to do an episode where we talk about how we relate to each character—main characters, of course, but also some ancillary characters, as applicable. We’ve mentioned that the Belchers and the Lands are so extremely similar, and I feel like there are other weirdo families out there who feel the same way. Let’s bond!
Thank you again to Jen and Briddany for talking to me along with creating one of my new favorite podcasts. Once again, you can find Pod’s Burgers on iTunes, Facebook and their website.
