MCU mastermind Kevin Feige has revealed that the groundbreaking Muslim-American superheroine Ms. Marvel is set to be introduced in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film!

With the upcoming Captain Marvel film starring Brie Larsen as Carol Danvers coming soon, many have been wondering whether that character’s introduction could in-turn lead to the addition of fan-favorite character Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel.) We now have our answer: there are definite plans in the works to introduce the character!

The news comes from Kevin Feige, the man at the top of the Marvel Cinematic Universe food chain. He was recently asked in an interview about the possibility of introducing the trailblazing Muslim superhero and was more than optimistic about her MCU prospects. Watch the brief exchange below:

It only makes sense for Ms. Marvel to be introduced shortly after the introduction of Carol Danvers. After all, Kamala is inspired to take up the mantle of Ms. Marvel because she wants to follow in Captain Marvel’s footsteps.

In the comics, Kamala carries the Inhuman gene and has the ability to morph and stretch her body in any way she can imagine. This is a power-set that has yet to be seen in the MCU which is another interesting element of the character’s introduction.

The news is especially exciting for diverse moviegoers who have been hoping for more representation in big Hollywood films. The introduction of Kamala Khan in a high-budget superhero franchise will be a groundbreaking event in cinema – fitting as it was also a similar event in comic book history.

In terms of representation, Muslim-Americans are among the least seen in media. When they are seen, many feel that they are portrayed negatively or in strict compliance with harmful stereotypes. This will be an incredibly important role and one that will surely see a large amount of interest from young Muslim actresses.

As for Marvel, it seems that they are realizing that diversity in media is not only a nice thing but a very profitable one at that. It only makes sense for them to commit to introducing more characters of differing ethnic backgrounds into their live-action films after the overwhelming praise (and never-ending Box Office receipts) this year’s Black Panther received.

The question we are left with now is when could Ms. Marvel be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It is tough to say as the post-Avengers 4 slate is being tightly kept under wraps at the moment but common sense would suggest that Kamala may be introduced in the (not yet announced but inevitable) sequel to Captain Marvel.
