iZombie Season 5 is officially going to be the last season of the supernatural-comedy show. This could be a fitting end since the showrunners now have time to plan.

One thing I like about The CW is the way the network has given us warning about shows ending over the last few years. The Vampire Diaries and The Originals both had time to fully plan out their final seasons, giving fans exactly what they wanted and needed for the end. There has been closure with the episodes and a sense of finality, especially with The Vampire Diaries, which saw a number of former characters return.

Now iZombie gets that treatment. The showrunners have been told ahead of time that this is going to be their last year. They’ve now got until the summer (when they’ll likely start filming again) to plan out a season that wraps up all the niggling stories left over. Of course, we have no idea what the Season 4 finale is going to entail, but it certainly looks like its going to be epic and put Liv in an extremely awkward position due to her stance as Renegade.

Giving fans closer is all they really ask about their favorite shows. It prevents uprisings on Twitter like we’ve seen with #SaveLucifer and #RenewTimeless–granted, a Timeless decision hasn’t been made at this time, but fans are getting ready to fight a potential cancellation already. Fans have a sense that they’re appreciated.

Having a year for the news to sink in also gives us time to prepare. While right now I’m disappointed, I’m not quite in the angry or shocked phase I was when I found out Lucifer was being canceled this year. With this warning, I can consolidate my feelings better and focus on the goodness that is to come. Maybe we’ll even finally figure out exactly how this virus started and see a cure/vaccine created or even see Liv reunite with her mom and brother–I mean, where are they now they know about zombies?

We also don’t have to worry about a major cliffhanger. As a Lucifer fan, I need to know what comes next and that isn’t the first show to get that sort of treatment. I need to know what would have come next on Witches of East End and what Dark Angel had planned. There are so many shows that end with these major cliffhangers that have you guessing and hoping someone writes a decent fanfiction with their ideas. With a season’s warning that it will be the end, we know the showrunners will actually wrap the story and there’s no need to worry about that–unless they’re mean, that is!
