Supernatural Season 2, Episode 21 gave us one of the most shocking episodes of the show we’d ever seen. Never did we expect to lose one of our two main characters.

“All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1” promised to be an intense episode from the very beginning. Supernatural Season 2, Episode 21 ended up delivering one of the most shocking and heartbreaking episodes. Who would have thought a show would have been brave enough to kill one of the two only main stars at the time? Of course, we know differently now, but it was shocking to watch it the first time.

Here’s a look at the events of the first half of the Supernatural Season 2 finale. Let’s look back and remember how you felt the first time.

Sam disappears

More from Hidden Remote

The episode kicked off instantly, with Sam going into a diner for food when he suddenly goes missing. By the time Dean gets into the diner, all that’s left is dead bodies. Dean needs to turn to others for help; mainly Bobby and Ash. Ash does have information, but he’ll only share in person.

When Dean and Bobby get to the Roadhouse, it’s gone. Everything has been burnt out, with all occupants, including Ash, dead. However, Ellen’s body is nowhere to be found. Suddenly, Dean is struck by a series of images.

Sam teams up with Andy

Sam is in an abandoned town with other Special Kids, including Andy and Ava. Two other Special Kids are Lily, who shares she stops people’s hearts when she touches them, and Jake, a soldier who had been in Afghanistan on active duty and has the ability of extra strength.

When they’re attacked by a demon, Sam explains that it’s an Acheri demon in the shape of a young girl. Lily isn’t interested in sticking around and turns up dead, killed by the demon who doesn’t want anyone to leave.

Needing to get a message to Dean, Sam searches for a way to call. Andy offers an option. He’s been practicing his powers and can send Dean a vision of where they are. That’s why Dean gets a series of flashing images.

Dean and Bobby figure out Sam’s location

It all works. Dean and Bobby figure out Sam is at Cold Oak in South Dakota (convenient for Bobby’s location). Now they just need to find a way to get there.

Most of the focus is on Sam managing his time in the place. it’s clear that the Yellow-Eyed Demon has something to do with this and he wants to pit all the Special Kids against each other. In fact, the Yellow-Eyed Demon comes to each of the kids to tell them that he needs one to come out on top to lead the demon army. Sam (and the others, although we don’t see them) gets visions of himself as a baby and how Mary knew the demon.

Sam also learns that Ava has disappeared. She’s broke the salt line that he’d put up on the exits and the Acheri demon has killed Andy. It turns out Ava has been working for the Yellow-Eyed Demon for the last few weeks (since she went missing) to come out on top. However, when she comes to summon the demon again, Jake kills her so she can’t.

Jake and Sam start making their way out, but Jake decides that he doesn’t trust Sam and attacks him. The two fight and Sam knocks Jake unconscious. That’s when Dean and Bobby get to Cold Oak, where Sam starts walking towards Dean. However, Jake was never unconscious, it seems. He grabs the knife Sam had dropped and stabs Sam in the back and Sam dies in his brother’s arms. We’re left with Dean shouting out for Sam in the final moments, as Bobby chases after Jake.
