Roseanne recap: Season 10, episode 9 Knee Deep
Roseanne’s knee is getting worse, and Darlene may make a career choice.
It is the season finale and Roseanne is dealing with knee issues. It’s getting so bad that she can’t even get off the toilet without Dan’s help. He asks her if she has made an appointment for the surgery, but Roseanne knows there is no money to pay for anything. “the surgeon is not going to give it his best shot when you are paying him with a coffee can full of nickles.”
Dan begins to feel guilty. He quickly realizes the only way to cure the situation is to bid the next job opportunity as low as he can get. Then dodge union bi-laws and hire “illegals” at a cheaper rate. This means that his best friend Chuck will be out of a job. Roseanne does not like the idea of him sacrificing for her. Giving him the power, it leads to her saying “this is not how this marriage is built.”
Roseanne doesn’t want Dan to lose his business, so her and Jackie decide to head down to the basement and look for something they can sell to earn the co-pay. While searching they discover a doll named “Magdelena.” The doll is a Kestner and could be worth up to $5,000.

They now have a legitimate source of income. Unfortunately, when taking it to an appraiser, he notices that the parts are not all original. Killing the value, and making the doll worth only $100. While at the appraiser office, Rosie gets a call from Dan. He tells her that there is a flood in the basement.
Chuck comes down and tells Dan that he found out about using the “illegals.” Dan explains that he will do whatever he needs to do. If that means cutting out his best friend from making money, then that will be done. Roseanne asks Dan, what the extent of the damage is. His reply “That depends, you didn’t pick up flood insurance while you were out, did ya?”
After Roseanne heads upstairs to entertain the family, Dan continues to clean up and preserve important items. Mistakenly, he stacks too many on an unstable shelf and it crashes all objects into the water. At this point, Dan loses control. He takes a crowbar and begins banging it against the door. Leaving several holes.
When Dan returns upstairs, he finds out that the president is going to declare a state of emergency due to the flood. Dan realizes that if it is declared such a situation, FEMA will give Dan the money to repair the basement and enough to get Rosie her knee surgery. Moments later they find that the president does declare the state of emergency, in a tweet, spelling Illinois wrong.
Notes:
- Best Line: Becky to Darlene when trying to help her get tips. Becky flings her a push-up bra and says “It will make you look anatomically correct.”
- Dan and Chuck work out their job situation thanks to a paid vacation and FEMA.
- Darlene appears to be writing again.
Roseanne will return for season 11 in the fall.
