In a surprising, but impressive, move by ABC to cancel Roseanne, it shows that no matter how popular you are, racism is not tolerated.

Roseanne has been making headlines since the early hours of this morning after Roseanne Barr apologized for a racist tweet that she sent about former President Obama’s White House adviser, Valerie Jarrett. The tweet has since been deleted.

To make matters worse, after it was pointed out that the ‘Planet of the Apes’ tweet was racist, she responded by saying that Muslim is not a race. Barr has since apologized and planned to remove herself from Twitter as well. But her apologize were a bit too late. Calls for Roseanne to be fired were being made on Twitter for her remarks.

The show’s cast and crew also expressed their opinion with show writer and consulting producer Wanda Sykes announcing that she would not be returning for the next season.

ABC makes a surprising and impressive move

During the initial upset caused and reports being made. ABC had not come forward to express their opinion on the matter. However, ABC has now released a statement, and it has to be the most surprising, but impressive, move by a network. They canceled Roseanne in response to the racist tweets.

More from ABC

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey issued the following statement.

"“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,”"

This comes as a major shock to many. Roseanne became one of the most watched and most talked about series. The reboot has seen phenomenal success since the revival and many were already looking forward to what was to come next season.

Understandably, this will come as a major shock for those who are now out of work all because of one individual. Yet, it shows that ABC is willing to take the hardline and show that no matter how popular something may be, racism is not tolerated.
