Supernatural Season 13 had its highs and lows. The writing team at SPN Hunters has got together to share their individual favorite and least favorite episodes from the season.

There’s no denying that Supernatural Season 13 had its high points and low points. Whether you were a fan of the Wayward Sisters idea for a spin-off, loved the almost-fully animated crossover special, or really liked the directorial risks taken throughout, there was something this season that you’d love. At the same time, there was something you’d likely hated.

We all have our own opinions. There are certain elements about the series we love and loathe. Some loved that multiple beloved characters were brought back, while others hated that idea. There were ongoing gags with Evil Colonel Sanders, which drew some in and turned others off. Then there were opinions of underused storylines and annoying character moments.

More from Supernatural

Here at SPN Hunters, we’re the same. We don’t all have the same opinions or thoughts on episodes. This is the joy of being in such a diverse fandom. We get to debate and share our opinions—and there should be no reason at all for attacks! So, we thought we’d get together as a team of writers and share our personal favorite and least favorite episodes of Supernatural Season 13.

The list is in order of episodes rather than a rank, so it’s a little easier to follow.

The favorites

Episode number: 1

Episode name: Lost and Found

It’s always hard to choose one or two favorites from a whole season, but one of my favorites has to be Lost and Found. It was full of throwback moments to the earlier seasons and gave us something fresh. We got to see Jack in all his glory—no not that! Mind out of the gutter, people!—with powers that he didn’t fully understand. I love Cass to pieces, and Jack’s appearance reminded me of Castiel’s introduction so much.

Episode name: Advanced Thanatology

The second on my list has to be Advanced Thanatology for a few reasons. The first is that it gave us Death back. I always questioned the death of Death. It didn’t make sense, but Billie’s return was something I could accept. The second was Dean’s development. I really wish this development had continued because it could have included some amazing messages for people, but the lack of development further into the season doesn’t negate this episode. And finally, the episode pulled us back to the creepy feeling and violent spirits. This made me think of episodes like Family Remains and Asylum, so that’s always a plus point for me.

Episode number: 6

Episode name: Tombstone

This episode makes me happy. Cas is back and reunited with everyone. Team Freewill 2.0 is born. And everyone is truly happy, which I’m pretty sure is the only time this happens this season. Because after this, Jack goes away to find himself and then ends up behind the rift.  And the whole cowboy storyline is just plain fun. After having a dark beginning to the season, it’s nice to see Dean giddy and enjoying himself. Episodes that make me smile are always some of my favorite, and I think we need more episodes like this in the future.

The favorites continued

Episode number: 10

Episode name: Wayward Sisters

This is hands down my favorite episode of the season. I always love when Jody and Donna come to visit, and having all the other girls around, kicking butt, really made me happy. The fact that ninety percent of the episode is held up by characters that are not Sam and Dean is really a testament to how strong the Wayward Sisters really are. The dynamics between them, the nice balance between comedy and drama, the tone of the show wasn’t lost. Based on the quality of this episode, I really feel there was a missed opportunity to pick this up as series.

Episode number: 11

Episode name: Breakdown

Breakdown makes it to the list for the fact that the monster was no monster but human, a reminder that the scariest and most dangerous of monsters are us. The episode was more focused on Sam and Dean trying to solve a case, so a throwback to the older season. Donna featured in the episode, and who doesn’t love Donna. And the idiot kidnapped Sam. Everyone knows you don’t do that, Dean turns into some momma bear hulk assassin whenever that happens.

Episode number: 15

Episode name: A Most Holy Man

A Most Holy Man was great because of the underlying message. I personally didn’t like the filming but hey, credit where credit is due, they took a risk and for me it didn’t work. But at least they gave it a go. What I enjoyed most was the Holy Man himself. Both Sam and Dean were in very dark places at the time and he was able to get through to both of them in their own way. Especially Dean who has never believed in a higher power looking out for them, and who can blame him really.

Episode name: Scoobynatural

My best episode of Supernatural season 13 is undeniably “ScoobyNatural” and I don’t believe that really needs an explanation of why it was so good and such a guilty pleasure to watch. If you have seen the episode you already know why it’s so good.

The least favorites

Episode number: 8

Episode name: The Scorpion and The Frog

This episode is pretty forgettable. In fact I did forget about it until I was refreshing my memory for this task. It’s a pretty throwaway episode, and one of the campier ones of the season. Basically the whole point of the episode is to get a Nephilim tracking spell, and they don’t, so the episode is pointless. We’re introduced to a bunch of new characters who seem like they’ll be important, but end up not, and a lot of what happens is just plain silly. And if the episode is not memorable enough for me to remember it existed by the end of the season, it probably didn’t need to happen.

Stephanie Caffrey

My worst episodes of Supernatural season 13 is a bit more tricky. There were plenty of episodes that had moments that made you want to put your foot through the telly. Did the writers just have a thing against Sam in this one? Not only did they completely overlook the fact he had been to Hell, not just once by the way but twice, but you made him look completely stupid as well. Did you forget he was on the fast track to becoming a hot-shot lawyer? Surely you must have by thinking he could blow out fire!

Episode number: 20

Episode name: Unfinished Business

No offense Richard Speight Jr. You put a hell of a lot of effort into “Unfinished Business” but it just didn’t quite click for me. That doesn’t mean it didn’t work for others of course, but for me, it just didn’t. This was another episode where something new was tried but it just didn’t work. The story really wasn’t attention-grabbing enough and by the end, I was honestly quite bored.

Callum Gunn

I wanted to like this one, but in the end it fell considerably flat. Firstly, let me admit that I’m not a Tarantino fan. There; I’ve got that out of the way! Secondly, I’ll also admit that I’m not the biggest Gabriel fan. While I had sympathy for him about the torture of Asmodeus, the fact that Sam and Dean had both been tortured for longer than his seven years of hell riled me.

But that wasn’t the worst part. The thing that really killed the episode was Kevin’s storyline in the Apocalypse World. He was brought in just to kill off, and was used as a suicide bomber with a line adapted from one that should have been Crowley’s exit line. Yeah, that did it for me!

Episode number: 21

Episode name: Beat the Devil

As the season end got closer, I’d hoped we’d see more action from Apocalypse Michael and the other angels. I hoped we’d see more Charlie, more Ketch, more Apocalypse Bobby, and more Jack and Mary bonding. Beat the Devil sort of had that, but didn’t quite hit the mark. Plus, once again Sam became the damsel in distress—and don’t get me started on Dean’s reaction! There was too much wrong with this episode compared to everything that was right (like seeing monsters in the Apocalypse World!)
