Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is off to a wonderful start with its first two episodes. Check out our recap.

Cloak & Dagger wastes no time with the origins of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. When we catch up with them years later, they’re both living with tragedy in two different ways. Tandy is sleeping in a church and Ty still has both of his parents and a nice house.

Tandy and Ty meet at a party out in the woods and Tandy snatches his wallet. Once Ty chases her down and their hands touch, we see their powers awakened. They had been dormant since the night they both lost someone close to them.

Not only did Tyrone watch his brother die, but he had to live through the cops lying about it. After his encounter with Tandy, he wakes up on a rooftop and immediately sees the cop who shot his brother. For Tandy, when she sees her mom, she’s taken back to the ballet class.

Gloria Reuben plays Adina Johnson and she has a nice, but painful moment with Ty where she’s afraid of losing him even if he does everything right. Losing one child certainly has to be hard enough on his parents and Ty is self-aware enough to know why they’re a bit harsh on him.

Tandy uses one of the tickets for the ballet and the guy she stole it from comes back. When Rick tries to rape her, a dagger appears in her hand and goes right through him. Meanwhile, Ty finds himself in the trunk of the cop’s car. The cop tracks him down and starts shooting at him.

Cloak & Dagger has some nice subtleties in the show like Tandy still having Ty’s brother’s jacket and Ty still having one of her ballet shoes from the day they woke up on the beach. The show also doesn’t shy away from tough subject like rape, drug abuse and racism.

In the second episode, “Suicide Sprints,” we see Tandy and Ty continuing to figure out what’s going on with them in their own ways. Ty shows up late for practice and the team pays for it by having to run suicides. It’s not the best term to use, but as someone who ran many of those when I played basketball, I can attest to how unpleasant they are. So when a few his teammates surround him in the locker room, it’s understandable that they’re mad. However, locking him in was a bit drastic.

Tandy wants out of New Orleans after her dagger goes through Rick. Liam is willing to do whatever it takes to help her out. When the two of them crash a wedding, he tells Tandy that he’ll protect her no matter what. While Tandy comes from money, she certainly doesn’t have it now and you can tell at times that she misses it.

Ty has another talk with his mom about keeping things together despite everything they’ve been through. When she kisses his forehead, Ty sees her fear of losing both sons. When he pulls away, she feels dizzy and falls asleep on the couch.

Liam tells Tandy that he knows she’s living in the church and tells her that she’s bad at lying to him. He truly cares about her and you can tell that she doesn’t know how to handle that so she pushes him away instead. She’s driving away and Liam ends up being arrested.

The episode quite literally ends with a bang as Ty goes to kill the cop who killed his brother, but he’s transported to the road that Tandy is on. These first two episodes had a great balance between developing the characters and letting us see their powers. We don’t need to constantly see their powers in use because that wouldn’t give us the full story. They made these characters well-rounded and Cloak & Dagger is off to a nice start. We have some great expectations for this show.

Cloak & Dagger airs on Freeform on Thursdays at 8 PM EST.
