Having aired two new episodes this week after a long break, Ghosted is back with a vengeance. Under the guidance of a new showrunner, the freshman comedy’s tone is a little different, but the heart is still the same.

Our friends over at the Bureau Underground have been in a bit of a slump recently on Ghosted. After three months without a new case, Leroy and Max start to show signs of cabin fever. With everyone trying their hardest to keep busy, and sane, Leroy nearly loses it when he catches his own reflection in a window, threatening to throw a water dispenser jug through it.

Sensing his partner isn’t doing too well, Max decides to take Leroy out for some tacos to get to the bottom of it. After lunch, Leroy doesn’t feel any better, and passes on returning to work. Exploring the rest of the building, he discovers the wire hanger business above the Bureau has remained untouched for some years, with many layers of dust to prove it. While looking out the window, a mysterious car shows up. Leroy, at first, believes the person driving the car to be a threat, but soon finds out is actually just someone looking for a hanger supplier who happened to be in the neighborhood for some tacos.

Inviting him in, Leroy makes up a story for the wire hanger business on the spot, telling the visitor that he is following in the footsteps of his father and his father’s father. All while this is going on, the Bureau staff is watching and listening through the surveillance system as if it was some kind of interactive reality show, eating pizza and assisting in the charade as much as they can.

Not interested in Leroy’s improvisations, Max nearly loses his cool. After picking up the water cooler jug to throw through a window, a la Leroy at the beginning of the episode, Max finds out he is in over his head with the heavy jug and falls over. While on the floor, Max discovers a wire tucked neatly out of sight under the window sill.

Worried, Max interrupts Leroy’s sales pitch to hand him a note detailing the discovery. Back in the office, Leroy, Max, and Captain Lafrey trace the wire through the office while Annie and Barry distract the man looking to buy hangers, believing he might have something to do with the wire. Tracing the wire back to the taqueria, Max and Leroy head inside to see if they can get some answers, but are only left with more questions after their search results in a dead end.

Outside, the staff wonder if they can safely discuss the wire tap, fearing nowhere near the property is in the clear. While everyone has a different idea about who would tap their office. Captain Lafrey, taking charge as she does, tells everyone to “remain cautious” and “stay on the trail while it’s hot.”

Episode 11 opens with a magic show, presented by Max, to a depressingly small crowd. After the performance, Leroy offers up some constructive criticism while he drives his partner home. While he think slight of hand tricks do better in an intimate setting, Leroy is glad Max is having some fun.

Back at the Bureau, the staff continues to brainstorm ideas about who tapped their office, and why. Their meeting is interrupted by the entrance of Merv Minette, the newly appointed director of the department, who no one, even Captain Lafrey, knew was coming. Crushed and confused, Lafrey steps down and submits to being replaced. Minette, acting rather suspicious, tells the staff to stop digging into the source of the wire, while implying some employees might be getting let go soon.

During a one-on-one with Max, Minette grills him over his credentials and makes fun of his claimed UFO sighting. While talking with Leroy, Minette levels with him. Understanding where he’s coming from, the two sort of hit it off, joking and laughing like old pals, much to the chagrin of Max, who worries he’s about to get fired.

Finding a new lead in the wire mystery, Max plans a stakeout, which Leroy disapproves of. During a surprise birthday celebration for Minette, lead by Annie who uses her father’s high-ranking government position to secure her own at the Bureau, Max sneaks away to do some digging. Distracted by the birthday cake(s), Minette reveals to Leroy that no one is actually looking into the wire tapping, contrary to what he previously said.

While staking out a P.O. box with Barry, Max gets a call from Leroy, who is staking out their stakeout. Apologizing for not trusting his partner’s instincts, Leroy joins in. Having some time to kill, Max impresses Leroy with some much improved card tricks.

After watching a man access the P.O. box they were staking out, Max and Leroy approach him to ask some questions. As they walk towards him, the man is shot by an unknown assailant, who is subsequently shot by a drone, which is then shot down by someone in an SUV. Before they know it all the evidence is gone with the exception of a blood-stained ball cap with the phrase “I pee in pools” printed on it.

Was the wait for new Ghosted episodes worth it? The show definitely has a different feel to it, but I’m really digging it. Who do you think is being the wire tap? Can Minette be trusted? What does the “I pee in pools” hat mean? Have any fan theories? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @HiddenRemote!

Ghosted will be back next Sunday at 8:30/7:30c.
