Dean meets Ben, a boy that could be his son, in Supernatural Season 3, Episode 2. Meanwhile, Sam learns who the mysterious chick from the premiere is.

The Supernatural Season 3 premiere had left us with a burning question: who was that mysterious chick? Of course, now we know her as Ruby, but we didn’t get a name until the second episode of the season. This was at the time that Dean learned he may have a son out there–and despite what Lisa says, I still think Ben could be!

While the two had their separate issues, they also learned there were changelings in the area. What was supposed to be a booty call for Dean turned into a case for the Winchesters.

The introduction to the case

For the first scene of the episode, we meet a young girl called Katie. Her dad is taking her back to her moms, as Katie doesn’t want to stay at her dad’s house–there are monsters there. Sure enough, when the dad returns back to his home and decides to work in his wood ship, the saw turns on mysteriously and kills him.

There isn’t much time to dwell on that (and it looks like a vengeful spirit at first), as Sam and Bobby are still trying to figure out how to get Dean out of his deal. Rather than worry about that, Dean comes to Sammy with a case and the truth that he wants to head to this case because it’s in the same town as an old fling, Lisa Braeden.

We get a throwaway line that’s actually foreshadowing for Ben, about how it happened just over eight years ago. When they get to Cicero, Lisa is no longer just a yoga instructor. Now she’s a mom throwing a birthday party for her son, Ben, who is very much like Dean. Of course, Dean questions Lisa about Ben’s paternity but she denies that Ben is his.

Dean decides to be a father figure to Ben for a bit when her notices Ben is upset at the park. A bully has taken Ben’s video game, so Dean encourages Ben to get it back. Lisa sees Ben kick the bully in the groin and she knows Dean is responsible for it. Before he can focus too much on that, he sees a bunch of children staring creepily at him.

Sam meets Ruby

While all this happened, Sam is in a diner, where Ruby pays him a visit. She shares little bits that she knows about Sam, but the thing that surprises Sam the most is the mention of something happening to Mary Winchester’s friends. Ruby wants Sam to look into it and then give her a call. Just before she leaves, she also tells him there’s a job in town.

The job is linked to the children. There have been four accidents in the neighborhood but they never made it to the news. Sam visits one of the wives to find out her husband fell off a ladder. When outside, Sam sees a little girl giving him an errie glare and the mother has a mark on the back of her neck.

Meanwhile, Annette, Katie’s mom, finds her daughter is acting strangely; so strangely that she tries to force her way through a locked bathroom door when Annette rushes away from whatever her child has become. Annette decides that the only option is to kill her daughter by strapping her in the car and letting the car sink into the lake. It doesn’t work, as Katie is back home soaking wet when Annette gets home and acts like nothing happened.

Sam figures out the creature

It’s Sam who works out that the Winchesters are dealing with changelings. They kill the father and feed from the mother, taking over the look of the child. Ben is the latest victim and Dean notices the red mark outside the house. It’s sand and that helps them find where all the children are being kept.

The local realtor is the mother changeling, who is watching all the real children. When the Winchesters kill the mother changeling, the children all burst into flames. Sam and Dean are able to get Ben and the other children back home.

When at Lisa’s house, Lisa confirms that Ben isn’t Dean’s son. However, she is grateful that Dean helped save Ben and invites him to stay. Dean decides to leave.

While that happens, Sam makes calls to his mother’s old friends. All of them have been killed. Ruby now reveals that she is a demon and claims she wants to help Sam to save Dean.

We’re left with hope that Dean can be saved.
