One way to do that would be to create more standalone bottle episodes per season. For those unfamiliar with the term, bottle episodes are installments of a series that take place in one or two location and feature no guest performers. Traditionally, bottle episodes are used to save money, either because the series is already gone over budget. Or because the show’s producers want to allocate funds to more expensive future episodes.

Throughout its history, the Star Trek franchise has produced many bottle episodes, some of which are considered all-time greats. In fact, Star Trek Discovery already did a bottle episode in its first season, “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” and it was one of the series’ highpoints. If the show produced more episodes that told simple but meaningful stories in a fantastic setting, it would only make the program better. And it would help address another one of the series is major problems.
