Timeless has officially been canceled and already #SaveTimeless has begun. One call is for Netflix to save the day but this is far from likely.

Let me start by saying I hope I am wrong, I really do. I want the decision to cancel the show reversed and for Timeless season 3 to happen and Rufus to be saved. But I doubt it will. I doubt even the likes of Netflix will come in and save the day.

Why do I think that? Well because of the talk surrounding a movie to wrap up the series.

If you haven’t learned by now, the announcement of Timeless being canceled was followed by the suggestion that fans may get a movie to wrap up that shocking season 2 finale, and give some closure to everyone who campaigned so hard to see the series renewed.

More from NBC

It’s a similar thing they did with Firefly. A huge outcry followed the cancellation of that TV series so a movie was made called Serenity and it was written in a way so it gave closure to the Firefly fandom.

This is all well and good, and I am sure best intentions have been meant. But, the idea pretty much sinks any possible hope of another network or streaming service like Netflix, who have saved other canceled shows like FOX’s Lucifer, from coming in and saving Timeless.

Announcing a movie is likely to cause hesitation amongst networks from saving the show. Instead of them thinking that there is a show that has been left wide open for them to pick up, they are going to be thinking, “oh ok, they have intentions to wrap things up, let’s leave them to it.”

Now maybe Netflix will come in and pick Timeless up with the idea of making the movie as a Netflix Original. That would certainly be a possibility, but then again they might be hesitant because if talks have already been ongoing, then plans may already be in place for the movie and Netflix might not want to get involved.

Basically, there is little to gain from stepping into a project that is already on a projected path. You can’t create your own ideas if it is and it’s difficult to make changes if anything has already been outlined. Basically, the announcement of a possible movie sends a message from NBC saying, “stay away, we will wrap this up ourselves.”

I hope I am wrong, I really do. It’s a sad day for every Clockblocker out there, but I think this is truly the end for our beloved Timeless.
