Set It Up is already being hailed as the best romcom in years. While it may not go down in history as the best romcom, it may actually be more important. Zoey Deutch is why this Netflix original movie is getting so much attention.

The basic premise of Set It Up is a bit like a millennial Parent Trap meets Taming of the Shrew. Like that other infamous Taming of the Shrew reimagination,10 Things I Hate About You, an unsuspecting couple is deviously set up. Deutch plays Harper, a sports loving assistant who dreams of becoming a high powered journalist like the woman she works for, Kirsten (Lucy Lieu).

The only problem is that she isn’t writing. Instead, Harper is brilliantly running Kirsten’s sports based online news site, and this means working late into the night. Late into the evening, she finds herself meeting up with the arrogant Charlie (Glen Powell). Like Harper, he is biding his own time and precious youth as a personal assistant. Working for the slick Rick (Taye Diggs) means late nights, and the two meet when they haggle a delivery man for a gourmet takeout dinner for their perspective bosses.

Soon, the two realize that their lives would be so much better if Kirsten and Rick hooked up. The two knew their bosses so well it was easy to push the two together and use their extensive knowledge to flame the sparks of love.

Meanwhile, Charlie is beginning to realize how cool Harper really is in comparison to his supermodel girlfriend. As they get closer, the couple begin to realize that their love match set up is destined to cause one party heartache.

Set It Up  may have some flaws in the story, and even some flaws in the pacing. Yet, the reason that this is one of the most interesting movies of our time is that it pinpoints when audiences first fell in love with the effervescent Zoey Deutch.

If those dimples and sparkling smile seem oddly familiar, it may be because Zoey Deutch is the younger daughter of Back to the Future star Lea Thompson. Throughout Set It Up, Zoey shines such a bright light, that audiences are surely willing to overlook any flaws in this Netflix original movie. She just sells the character, and we fall in love with her at the same time Charlie does.

Zoey Deutch fans don’t have to wait too for another movie. She and her older sister Madelyn both star in the newly released The Year of Spectacular Men. This highly anticipated movie, which is co-penned by Madelyn, is also their mom’s directorial debut. Along with Set It Up, 2018 is  clearly the year of Zoey Deutch.
