Ty and Tandy explore their powers together in the latest episode of Cloak & Dagger, Lotus Eaters. Check out our recap!

Cloak & Dagger kicks off with a flashback to what Ivan Hess was up to the day the oil rig blew up. He’s the only survivor and last episode we met him in his catatonic state. Tandy enlists Ty’s help to open the door that she couldn’t when she touched Ivan. Ty wants to know if Tandy is just making things up as she goes and she most certainly is. However, it gives us the first time that the two truly work together.

Tandy and Ty find Ivan in a room by himself and he’s delighted to see them because they’re something new. The only problem is, he doesn’t know he’s Ivan Hess. While Ty and Tandy have each had their own problems to face throughout the show, they hadn’t faced one quite like this until now.

Ivan tells them that he lost count after having the explosion happen about 100,000 times. He doesn’t recall having a daughter or what work he did. He does, however, remember Nathan Bowen as the “guy who keeps calling.” To break the chain more than they already have, Tandy answers the phone when he calls.

We also find out in this episode that it is energy that they were drilling for, not oil. This explains the powers that Ty and Tandy got from the explosion. While Tandy keeps talking to her dad, Ty goes to figure out how to stop the explosion. He hits the switch and turns off the valves, but it didn’t work.

Ty thinks that he and Tandy are going to leave together but he ends up leaving by himself and by the time he goes back, Tandy doesn’t remember him. Time moves at a much different pace on the oil rig and Ty’s brief leave wasn’t as brief as he thought. Tandy remembers bits and pieces, but most of what she remembers was horrible. She also admits to playing Ty to get him to help.

Tandy starts throwing dagger at Ty in anger even though they won’t hit him. Ty tells her to ask her dad something only he would know so that she’ll believe him that they’re just in Ivan’s memory. She asks him who is in the backseat with him and she knows he isn’t real because his response is that nobody is in the backseat. It’s a heartbreaking moment because you can see how much that answer hurts Tandy.

I want to detour for a brief moment to talk about Tim Kang’s performance as Ivan. He adds some comedy to the show with his cookie-sniffing while still getting across the direness of the situation. He really does look like a guy who’s lost his mind by living the same moment over and over again.

Tandy comes up with the idea to ask Ivan where his cookie came from and continues to remind him about Mina. She also doesn’t even answer this time when her dad calls. She tells him the secret ingredient is cardamom. She finally gets through to him and the three of them try to get out. This time they do and Ivan is finally out of his catatonic state, but has no idea who Tandy and Ty are.

This episode also is the first to have a bit of a happy ending. There’s been lot of death to deal with so far in the season, but Ty and Tandy get to witness a reunion that has been years in the making. It shows that good things can happen when the two use their powers together.

We see Tandy put on the jacket she took from Ty all of those years ago and Ty opens the shoebox that has her ballet slipper in it. Tandy receives a call from Ty and he just needs someone to talk to because she’s the only one who understands. He plays the tape with him and Billy on it so they can both listen. These two are getting closer and slowly leaning into each other more.
