The Charmed SDCC 2018 panel took place and now we get to know more about the CW’s freshman series. Here’s everything we learned from the panel.

If you haven’t heard about the Charmed reboot yet, you must have been living under a rock. It has fans of the original series divided; some refusing to give it even a glimmer of a chance and others who want to see what it’s like before making a decision. The stars and showrunners of the series took to SDCC 2018 in one of the first panels of the whole convention and here’s what we know about CW’s Charmed now.

The panel started with an exclusive look at the pilot episode. Yes, everyone in the room got to see the very first episode live, months before the show will air on national TV. I’m jealous just for that simple fact alone! The great news is there was a lot of buzz in the room and positivity about the series.

Fans in the room took to Twitter to share how diverse and funny the pilot episode was. It introduces the main characters, with some already choosing their favorites. Now, I really can’t wait to see the pilot episode.

Why a Charmed reboot?

More from Comic Con

One of the biggest questions for a long time has been why a reboot of three sister witches is even needed. Well, showrunner Jennie Urman shared:

"It was necessary to bring back to the television strong women capable of kicking asses."

It really is as simple as that.

This isn’t a reboot just for the sake of it. There will be homages to the fans of the original, as well as a new look at the three sisters. Considering the original began 20 years ago, this really is going to be a modern-day take in a world of diversity.

The powers of the three sisters will develop over time. This does sound like a connection to the original series, where they started off fairly weak had to use the Power of Three to defeat a warlock to getting to the point where Piper could freeze whole rooms.

The cast and showrunners come in peace when it comes to the fans of the original.

A series about diversity

While there will be plenty of homages to the past, this show will be their own. One of the biggest topics is that of diversity. We already knew one of the main characters would be a lesbian and that will remain a focal point throughout the series. One fan at the Charmed SDCC 2018 panel shared a short clip of Urman chatting about diversity.

Reciting a spell from the pilot

For those who haven’t had a chance to see the exclusive airing of the pilot, there was a quick tease of a spell shared online. The three stars took the chance to recite a spell. The spell is in Latin, which was something we got a hint about in the promo for the series. What’s really cute is that they all hold hands while they recite it.

Who’s the new Charmed for?

Bear in mind that this reboot is a CW series. Looking at the current slate of programming, especially the shows that do well, it shouldn’t be surprising that this new series is aimed at young adults. The CW is a “millennial” network after all. Some of the older fans of the original series probably won’t enjoy the younger feel, but it will certainly appeal to those who love the likes of Riverdale and Supernatural.
