Nashville recap: What is Juliette and Avery’s medical scare?
A medical scare helps to bring Juliette and Avery closer on Nashville. Meanwhile, Daphne learns her suspicion about Gideon are correct.
The penultimate episode of Nashville is over. The series finale airs next week and I’m not sure if I’m ready for it. This has been my world for the last six years. All I can say is at least with this cancellation, we’ve had the chance to have a full story.
But let’s focus on this week’s Nashville right now. Juliette and Avery faced a medical scare, while Gideon’s secret unraveled. Here’s everything that happened.

Let’s start with Sean and Scarlett’s storyline, as it’s a relatively short and quick one. Realizing the ranch is closing down, Sean suggests they host a benefit concert. It would mean getting Scarlett on stage, which has been his goal for a while.
The benefit concert turns out great, with Gunnar performing an amazing song that is definitely not him–but in a great way. He’s finally getting over his writer’s block (and those scenes with the guitar were hilarious). However, at the end, Sean makes his move on Scarlett. She pushes him off. Sean’s wife is leaving and she is the one that he should be with. Tears streaming down her face, Scarlett tells Sean to go and he chases after his wife.
It’s sad, but it was the right decision. I’ve never wanted Scarlett to become the other woman.
Alannah makes her decision
Sean isn’t the only one trying to make a choice in his love life. Alannah needs to decide whether she’s going to put her career first or not and whether she’s going to fight Brad at his game. When she agrees to dinner, Brad continues to come onto her. Just as she tells him that she isn’t going to break up his marriage, Brad tells her that it’s already over.
The look on Alannah’s face tells us that this isn’t something she wanted to hear. Later, she decides it’s time to break up with Avery. I’m still not sure what she’s doing right now, whether she’s playing Brad’s game or not, but in a way I’m sad for Alannah and Avery. As much as I want Juliette and Avery to work out, Alannah doesn’t deserve what’s happening to her.
Juliette proves she’s a changed woman
With the press outside, Juliette decides it’s time to hold another press conference. She has Rosa and her son (I’m not sure how that happened, Nashville) who are willing to tell the same story Juliette is. During the press conference, Juliette also makes it clear that she is retiring from public life after everything.
After this, she turns to Hallie for advice and admits that she’s pregnant. Why isn’t she telling Avery yet? Well, she doesn’t want to seem like the little manipulator she once was.
Avery does come when Juliette asks though since neither want Cadence to be hounded by the press. That’s when Juliette mentions again that Cadence seems to be burning up. This was only mentioned once before in passing and it was easy to overlook it then. After all, Avery brushed it off and that’s what he does this time.
It’s only later on that Juliette calls Avery again with news that Cadence really is sick. Her fevers high and they decide to get Cadence to the hospital. It’s just in time, because Cadence has pneumonia and they’ve caught it early. Avery naturally feels guilty, but Juliette never once says “I told you so.” The old Juliette would! This gives the two a chance to open some dialogue, but we’re left waiting for that next week.
Deacon learns the truth
Finally, it’s all about Gideon. After an interview about her place in Nashville’s music competition, Daphne learns that Gideon really is drinking again. She’s not sure what to do, knowing that Deacon would instantly kick his father out.
Everything seems to be going so well at the benefit concert they’re all at–and Twig shows up to tell Maddie that he’s no longer working for Jonah so the two can be together, yay!–until the very end. When Deacon asks if Daphne wants to go with Gideon, Gideon makes an excuse. Deacon knows what this means and instantly starts searching through the car. Sure enough, he finds a bottle of whiskey.
I don’t think I need to tell you how it ends. Angry doesn’t seem enough for the emotions Deacon is feeling. He’s hurt, he’s shocked, he’s furious at Gideon. In front of his daughters, he kicks Gideon to the curb. A leopard doesn’t change his spots.
