Riverdale stars Casey Cott and Ashleigh Murray dish on Kevin and Josie’s latest relationships, tease a new dynamic between the duo and more in our must-see interview!

When we last left Riverdale teens Kevin Keller and Josie McCoy, their personal worlds had been turned upside down thanks to an unexpected romance between their parents. Despite the displeasure Josie and Kevin may feel with the revelation that Kevin’s dad and Josie’s mom have become an item, the relationship between the town’s former mayor and sheriff shows no signs of fizzling out.

In fact, when we caught up with stars Casey Cott and Ashleigh Murray during San Diego Comic-Con, the magnetic duo quickly revealed plans for their families to move in with one another this season; a move which will serve as a catalyst for further exploring the unique dynamic shared between their characters!

More from Comic Con

Q. As we head into Season 3, what can we expect from Kevin and Josie?

Ashleigh Murray: There’s going to be more singing. We’re hoping that there’s going to be more original music happening. I want to have the chance to see Josie and the Pussycats really be Josie and the Pussycats. It’s going to take Josie figuring out what her sound is and who she is as an artist.

With everything that happened last season with her original family unit breaking up and now having a new family unit, she’s going to go through some rebellious stages. Somehow out of that she will have her red hair in the show. She’s [also] going to be helping out with Veronica’s speakeasy, hopefully sharing a bathroom with Kevin.

Casey Cott: Our families are moving in together because our parents are fornicating…

Murray: … And that’s what good fornicators do.

Cott: So that’s going to be an interesting dynamic. Kevin, romantically, has a boyfriend who’s not quite out of the closet so that’s confusing and dark in its own way. Kevin’s romantic endeavors are always so drowsy, so other than that I think the most exciting part is moving in with [Josie].

He’s entering a new club so to speak, which is something that I haven’t really seen on TV in this form. I’m really excited for the storyline that they’ve come up with and I hope it’s something that they really dive into because it’s a really wonderful idea.  I know that [series creator] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] has been wanting to do this idea since Season 1, so I’m excited they’re doing it and I’m excited to see what they do.

Q. With Josie and Kevin moving in with one another, how should fans expect the move to affect the dynamic between the two characters?

Cott: I think it’s going to establish one to be perfectly frank. I don’t know that we’ve ever had a scene together….

Murray: Not a speaking scene, but we were sitting together at the lunch table when Ethel threw the milkshake in Veronica’s face and had that little moment.

Cott: Oh, and we did too when we sat our parents down.

Murray: I think that’s why they’re doing  it. We developed such a sweet chemistry. Casey is really funny and has incredible comedic timing and I feel like that’s definitely something that we need more of in the show. Not that it’s not great because it’s so dark, but because it’s nice to have that one person there to show you that life isn’t all bad. I think that the dynamic that Josie and Kevin have is going to bring a fun, sassy, comedic layer.

Cott: And a new light to both of our characters. I think it’s a really wonderful opportunity for them to dive into both of our characters and I hope that they take that opportunity and run with it.

I think that Josie is such a dynamic, layered person for so many different reasons that I’m excited to see them dive [into the character]. I’m glad that they’re hopefully going to use me and my character to explore more of her character because I think it’s fascinating; I think it’s wonderful.
