Legends of Tomorrow interview: Matt Ryan and Courtney Ford tease Season 3
By Cody Schultz
Join us as we sit down with Legends of Tomorrow stars Matt Ryan and Courtney Ford to discuss Season 3 of The CW’s zany superhero drama and what’s to come for Constantine and Nora this season!
When Legends of Tomorrow returns this fall for its fourth season, the Legends team will welcome yet another group of newcomers to its ranks as Matt Ryan and Courtney Ford reprise their roles as John Constantine and Nora Darhk in what will now be series regular roles.
The stage for their returns was, of course, set in the Season 3 finale which found both Constantine and Nora in two very different places. While Nora’s life was saved thanks to the Legends, she was apprehended by the Time Bureau and taken into custody. Fortunately for her, Ray managed to slip her her father’s time stone before she was taken away.

Constantine’s return, meanwhile, was much more laid out. As the season came to a close, the Legends attempted to enjoy a well-earned vacation in Aruba; however, their relaxation time was cut short when Constantine showed up to reveal that in freeing Mallus, they had opened a much larger can of worms. In other words, it was time to begin cleaning up their latest mess!
With Constantine and Nora now primed to make a major splash in Season 4, just what can fans expect next from the Legends newest additions? We caught up with stars Matt Ryan and Courtney Ford this July at San Diego Comic-Con to find out!
Q. Now that Constantine is joining the Legends team in a more regular role, what can we expect?
Matt Ryan: Look you drop John anywhere and he’s going to stir up some shit and cause some trouble. He brings his own baggage with him and his own complicated issues. Notoriously he doesn’t work well with a team, so putting him with a team of misfits – while he’ll fit right in – there’s going to be friction; there’s going to be things going on which will create conflict and drama.
Q. And for Nora, might we expect to see a continued struggle between the light and dark side?
Courtney Ford: I really love the character of Nora, she’s really close to my heart and she’s had a rough go. Both her parents were murdered. She was put into foster care. Then she put into a mental institute and was possessed by a demon since fourteen years of age, so that darkness is all that she’s ever known.
Then you juxtapose that with the extreme lightness and kindness of Ray Palmer. He’s like an alien to her, but in a way she’s like an alien to him.
I think he’s trying to bring out the good in her, so I think we will explore whether that’s possible. Will she stay bad? Will she become a complicated ally with the Legends? It’s exciting.
Q. Now that Constantine and Nora are sticking around in these series regular roles, what are you most looking forward to going forward?
Ford: Awesome fights! I just love the fights.
Ryan: What I’m looking forward to working with everyone. Everyone has been so great. I’ve not done many guest roles on shows and I always feel like it’s difficult to come onto an established show as an actor and do your thing with a tight-knit group, but everyone has been so welcoming and so lovely. I’m looking forward to exploring all of those different relationships and getting to know everyone and get into the muck of it.
[Nora and John] are almost quite similar in a way. They’re flawed and both have a darkness, so it will be interesting to see what comes to pass.
Ford: It will be interesting to see if Ray doesn’t like the dark being influenced more…
