Jason Statham’s The Meg is out! Will a sequel swim its way to theaters soon?

The latest summer shark movie stars Statham, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, and Ruby Rose. The Meg follows a group of scientists who discover a 75-foot Megalodon when they dive into the deepest part of the Pacific. The monster-size shark was believed to be extinct, but is now terrorizing everything and anything in its path. It’s not man vs shark, it’s Jason Statham vs shark!

The Meg is the big-screen Sharknado. In other words, fans of the ridiculous shark thriller want more absurd fun! Will their wishes be granted? Here’s what we know…

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, star Jason Statham said it bluntly — if the movie makes money, there will be another one:

"“I think it’s like anything in this day and age – if it makes money, there’s obviously an appetite to make more money… Everyone tries to make a good film, and it lies in the hands of the audience. People are the ultimate decider; the audience is the decider of whether anything gets to be a sequel or not,” Statham told the source."

You heard the man, shark fanatics! If you want more, go see the movie in theaters!

Another good sign The Meg will be getting a sequel is that its based on a book series. That’s right, the movie is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, which “follows the underwater adventures of deep-sea diver Jonas.” How many books are in the series? Seven! So there’s definitely more material to work with.

While I haven’t read the books myself, I have seen many fans of the series comment on how several events from the book differ in the movie. The Meg may not conclude the way the first book does.

Light spoilers ahead: Is it really a spoiler to say Jason Statham wins? Because, of course he does. So, with the main star alive, there likely will be a sequel. Megadolon babies, perhaps? The possibilities are endless when it comes to shark movies.
