Supernatural lore: The crocotta is not a sandwich!
The crocotta was introduced in Supernatural Season 3. Just what is the real lore vs. the Supernatural lore?? No, it’s got nothing to do with sandwiches as crocotta-Dean asked.
Supernatural Season 3, Episode 14 brought in a new creature: the crocotta. The creature is based on a real soul-sucking being in Ethiopian and Indian lore. Here’s a look at the real lore and Supernatural lore to see similarities and differences.
While crocotta-Dean joked about it being a sandwich, it was actually something much more dangerous. With the ability to mimic voices, it would draw people in and encourage them to kill themselves. Let’s take a look.

We’ve only seen the crocotta the once. While taking the human form, we’ve not seen exactly what this being looks like. However, there are some tell-tale signs of the creatures being around. One of those is the high number of flies in the area because they live in filth.
Another way a crocotta is known is from the line “come to me.” They’ve become famous for that line, which is how Sam was able to figure out what they were dealing with in the episode.
The idea is that the crocotta lures the victims in to suck the souls. Of course, Supernatural has shown that people can live without souls, but they’re a shadow of their former selves.
Real lore about crocottas
In Ethiopian and Indian lore, the creatures are dog-wolf types of creatures linked to the hyena. Considering many cultures view hyenas as creatures of evil, it’s not surprising that these dog-wolf creatures are linked to them.
While the lore differs on the look, there’s a part of the Supernatural lore that matches the real lore: the ability to mimic human voices. In the show, the crocotta mimicked the voices of the deceased loved ones. In real lore, the creatures will mimic human voices to call out for help. This is lore that was used for the wendigo in Supernatural Season 1, too!
Sometimes, the creature will mimic the voice of loved ones to draw people in. They can also make dogs dumb and prevent people from moving.
