#TBT: A lookback at A Ring of Endless Light with Jared Padalecki
In 2002, Jared Padalecki was one of the actors in Disney’s adaptation of A Ring of Endless Light. Here’s a look back on the anniversary of the movie’s release.
On August 23, 2002, Disney released A Ring of Endless Light. Based on the novel of the same name by Madaline L’Engle, the movie starred Mischa Barton, Ryan Merriman, and Jared Padalecki. As it’s the anniversary of the date the movie was released, it’s the perfect timing for a look back at one of Padalecki’s pre-Supernatural roles.
Jared played Zachary Gray, who is described in the novel as having velvety black hair. While Jared’s hair isn’t dark, it is a talking point. Do you think this started Jared’s luxurious locks now? Zach is also extremely intelligent, which also matches Sam Winchester. This is where similarities end.

In A Ring of Endless Light, Zach comes from a troubled home in a way. His parents show him no affection and don’t really do much to stop his rebellious ways. Despite his intelligence, he is routinely kicked out of school. This was always a character who was troubled but would be redeemed, which takes place in later books by the author. The books weren’t adapted into movies by Disney.

The movie was also less dark, especially in terms of his overall character. I guess this was to suit the Disney image in a way. The character is far less troubled and doesn’t get up to half the antics he does in the book. For a deeper look into this character, I urge you to read the novels.
Overall, the novel changes quite a bit from the books and not for the better. Many of the poignant deaths in the books have very little meaning in the Disney adaptation. This is possibly the reason the subsequent novels were never done.
