Supernatural Season 4, Episode 2 introduced us to the start of Lilith breaking the 66 seals to release Lucifer from the cage. Here’s a look at the events of the episode.

When Castiel told Dean he had work to do, little did we know it would involve preventing the release of Lucifer from the cage. Supernatural Season 4, Episode 2 saw the start of the breaking of the 66 seals. It was Dean’s duty to stop it all from happening.

Meanwhile, Bobby tries to work out whether it’s possible for an angel to get a soul out of the pit. Dean also has to decide whether he’s going to believe in angels and the Devil or not. Here’s a look at the events to remind yourself of the episode, titled “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester.”

Could Castiel really be an angel?

More from Supernatural

Quite honestly, Dean wondered everything we did at the time. Was it possible that Castiel really was an angel? Could an angel really save a soul from Hell?

According to Bobby, the lore says it’s possible. That makes Dean uncomfortable. Why would God want to save him?

Meanwhile, Ruby admits to Sam that she’s nervous about angels being around. It looks like it’s certainly possible angels are real and she thinks Sam should be afraid, too.

The only thing for it is to get in touch with other hunters, which Bobby tries to do. However, the hunter friend he has been trying to get in touch with isn’t answering. He finally finds out that she’s dead, and it looks like she’s been ripped apart by a spirit. Bobby realizes that the same has happened to other hunters.

The rising of the witnesses

It’s definitely possible a spirit is involved. When Sam is in the bathroom at a rest stop, he’s attacked by the spirit of Victor Henriksen, who blames Sam and Dean for his death. Dean is able to save Sam, but there’s another problem.

Bobby is attacked by the spirit of twin girls while at home, who blame him for their deaths. They lock bobby in a wrecked car and torment him. Once Sam and Dean get back, Dean is attacked by Meg Masters, who shares that she was just a possessed college student and had been awake for some of the possession. She blames Dean for not saving her and for the effect that the possession had on her younger sister.

Sam is able to find Bobby and the three of them get to a safe room in Bobby’s basement, which he built because he had a spare weekend–of course!

Sam and Dean noticed a branding on the spirits, something they’d never seen before. However, Bobby’s research tells them that they are “witnesses,” a sign of the impending apocalypse. Bobby has a spell to put the spirits to rest, but they’ll need an open first for it and that means getting out of the panic room.

Along the way, they run into the spirit of Ronald Resnick, from “Nightshifter,” who again, blames the Winchesters for his death. Once in the library, the Winchesters and Bobby are surrounded by various spirits.

Meg is now angry that Sam is working with Ruby, knowing that Ruby is possessing an innocent girl. Henriksen shares how Lilith tortured everyone in the police station before killing them all. Just as Meg is about to kill Bobby, Bobby completes the spell and the spirits all vanish.

One seal down

Castiel appears in a dream to Dean to tell him that it was Lilith who raised the witnesses. This was the first of 66 seals needed to release Lucifer from the cage. Even though the spell was used to stop the rising of the witnesses from continuing, the seal was still broken.

There’s more news. Angels have now returned to Earth but some have died in battle. The apocalypse is close to happening.
