Young Mary Winchester was a babe, according to Dean. She was also one excellent hunter and awesome woman. Here’s why she’s my Supernatural #WomanCrushWednesday this week.

Looking back over old episodes of Supernatural always reminds me of what I love or hate about particular characters. Last week, I had the chance to rewatch Supernatural Season 4, Episode 3. Dean had a chance to go to the past and meet Young Mary Winchester.

She is certainly a woman to aspire to be. Whatever you think of Mary Winchester now, Young Mary Winchester is honest, an idealist, and sacrificial. Here’s why she’s my #WomanCrushWednesday for this week–and not because, as Dean says, she’s “a babe.”

She puts family before herself

More from Supernatural

Young Mary Winchester may want out of the hunter lifestyle, but she puts her family first. Her mom and dad are hunters. They’ve raised her and she has respect for who they are and what they do. Plus, there is a part of her that wants to help other people. Without her and her family, what would be out there in the world?

Young Mary sacrifices her own happiness for many reasons. While she loves John, she continues to respect her father’s wishes.

The only time she puts herself first is at the very end of the episode. However, in a way, she’s putting family first. She makes a deal to get John back. Without him, there would be no Dean and Sam. In the end, her two children are named after her parents; the two who made sacrifices for her.

She’s a skilled hunter

When Young Mary Winchester goes on a date with John, she knows that there’s something off about the man following them. We know him as Dean, but her hunter instincts kick in and she sees him as a threat.

This is just the first time we realize that Mary is a hunter. We see her immediately in action, as she does her best to take Dean down.

However, it’s not the only time we see her in hunter mode. She’s skilled, smart, and ahead of the curve most of the time. While her father and Dean talk to the widow, she realizes that there’s something the young boy is hiding and goes to talk to him.

It’s clear where Sam’s personality comes from and in this moment, we kind of get a sense why John and Sam argued so much. At times, Sam was just like John but he clearly reminded John of Mary.

She’s idealistic and wants to protect a future family

Young Mary Winchester may be willing to put her parents first for a lot of Supernatural Season 4, Episode 3, but she is also idealistic and she looks to the future. She wants out of that hunter lifestyle, but not just for her. She wants to protect her future family.

This is a woman with an out plan. While we know now that Mary was never able to fully get out (because people always need saving from monsters), she didn’t want to bring her children into this. Mary never wanted her sons to grow up the way she did.

That idealism sticks with Mary throughout. And there’s a bittersweet element to hearing the way she talks, knowing that she’d end up dying and her boys would be pulled into the hunter’s life anyway.

She saw the best in people

Mary may have been a hunter, but she was also an honest and sweet girl. She could see the best in the right people.

Take John for instance. He’d just come back from a terrible war, but Mary could see that he was sweet, honest, and good for her. John was everything that a hunter wasn’t, and coming back from that war could have brought back a monster. She’d be willing to stick through the nightmares that he’d have.

When she finally realized who Dean was–at least, realizing he was a skilled hunter–Mary could see the good in him. She trusted him and wanted to work with him.

Then there were the innocent people. Her friends, the young boy who had been abused, plenty of people out there that she saw the good in. This was a woman with a heart of gold and she just wanted the best from the world.
