After a long wait, Netflix released the first teaser for their upcoming series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and it looks like it’ll be terrifying.

The original series based on Sabrina Spellman was called Sabrina the Teenage Witch and it was about as far from horror as a show could get. Think Full House meets Charmed. A lot of people liked it, but I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it was Melissa Joan Hart. I get irritated every time I look at her, I don’t know why, but it just happens. Sorry, Melissa.

Anyway, the new series based on Sabrina, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, looks absolutely NOTHING like that. Never thought two shows based on the same character could be so different. I’ll admit that when I heard Chilling Adventures would be a dark horror series, that it’d play tribute to The Exorcist and such, I didn’t believe it. I thought that on some level it’d have the same silliness that the original series contained. Now that I saw the trailer, I completely believe that it’s horror now.

It didn’t feel like a trailer for a show about a teenage witch attending two high schools, it felt like a season of Riverdale set in Salem run by a cult of dark forces. A true supernatural drama. Though Sabrina comes from the Archie Comics, there’s no crimes to be solved, instead there’s something scary underneath everybody’s bed and demonic beasts living in the woods.

More from Netflix

As the song “Happy Birthday to you” is sung like a ritual in an eerie sing-song voice in the background, we’re shown glimpses of smiling witches, a pentagram in the woods, bloody hands, more witches wearing creepy masks, a ritual being performed and a world covered in an orange haze as a goat man/demon walks in the woods. This same man with a goats head comes to Sabrina’s birthday party and she smiles right before she blows out the candles. It’s creepy and I can’t wait to see it!

It has the same look as Riverdale, but it does away with teen drama and introduces a new world of darkness and witchcraft. Unlike the other witches, Sabrina is a hybrid of witch and mortal, and it creates a conflict inside her as her two natures battle each other. She wants normalcy, but also to be part of her magical world. To solve this problem, she attends Baxter High with humans while continuing her magical studies at the Academy of the Unseen Arts at night.

This works out as well as you would imagine. From what we know about the plot, Sabrina’s favorite teacher at Baxter becomes possessed by the Devil’s handmaiden to become Madame Satan.

It does look like we’ll get a bit of the usual teen romance judging by a moment in the trailer where Sabrina is kissing a boy at Baxter High with the right amount of puppy dog passion. A chunk of season one might possibly involve her trying to hide the fact that she’s a witch, until he becomes victim to something horrible. Judging by what’s going on in Greendale, that something horrible will be very easy to come by.

Even though the show has yet to be aired, it already has a season two order. Both seasons were ordered at the same time and were shot back-to-back, meaning season two might already be completed or at least out of production.

It’s unknown how the series will deal with its connection to Riverdale. After it was moved to Netflix, whatever crossover potential it had seemingly died away. Yet, Greendale has been confirmed to exist in the Riverdale series with a hint of supernatural forces that go on there. Hope does remain for a character crossover, said by the showrunners themselves, but for right now lets enjoy the terror that Sabrina will bring us.

Season 1 will be released five days before Halloween on October 26 only on Netflix.
