The Big Bang Theory Season 12, Episode 2 recap: The perfect gift
By John Dotson
The latest episode of The Big Bang Theory had Sheldon and Amy going on a scavenger hunt and Raj searching for love in the wrong places. Here is what went down on the latest episode!
On Monday, The Big Bang Theory returned with a lot of funny moments including a welcomed return of Amy’s parents and their marital struggles. We also caught a glimpse of the Coopers on their honeymoon and the growing pains of being newlyweds.
In the second episode of season 12, Sheldon and Amy return from their honeymoon and embark on a ludicrous scavenger hunt. The episode also has a heartfelt moment involving Raj struggling with his loneliness. There are a lot of things happening with this crew on the latest episode so let’s get right into it. Here is what happened on last night’s episode of The Big Bang Theory!
Honeymoon Return
The episode opens with the gang hanging out with Sheldon and Amy who have finally returned from their honeymoon. The Cooper’s did not return empty-handed though and have brought everyone an “I love NY” T-shirt.
Leonard immediately notices something about the shirts is strange and Sheldon reveals that the gifts were actually bought on Amazon, not from New York. Also, Sheldon and Amy buy Penny a size double XL, which she clearly isn’t happy about.
The Perfect Gift
Much of the episode focused on a humorous gift from Leonard and Penny to the Coopers. In the episode, while they are opening wedding gifts in their home, Leonard and Penny gifted a mysterious glass-like piece that has the note “The perfect gift for the perfect couple.”
The object leaves both Sheldon and Amy perplexed because they have no idea the use of the gift. However, due to its suggestive shape, Amy wonders whether it’s a tool for coitus.

From here Sheldon begins going to the rest of the crew to see if he can get one of them to unwittingly tell him what it is, but his attempts are humorously destroyed. Come to find out though, Leonard is having a blast watching Sheldon struggle with the mystery of “The Perfect Gift.” We also discover that it’s a crystal wand that was a regift from Howard and Bernadette’s wedding, passed on to Leonard and Penny– and now to Sheldon and Amy.
Scavenger Hunt
Sheldon and Amy then visit Bert whom they press for answers on what type of crystal rock the gift is made of. Bert says that the wand is made of Quartz rock, which makes the two of them make a giant leap in mystery solving logic about it being a clue involving the coffee shop where they first met.
Once they get there, Amy presses the Barista about whether or not something was left for them at the coffee shop. They are directed to check the lost and found, where Amy finds a locket that contains no pictures inside. Sheldon and Amy make hilarious assumptions about all the items in the lost and found box, with a final punchline of Sheldon thinking sunglasses were placed in there “because their future is too bright.”
Once they end their pointless scavenger hunt they return to Leonard and Penny who are completely clueless about what has transpired. Sheldon and Amy thank them profusely for the best wedding gift ever and are thankful that Leonard and Penny would lead them on a scavenger hunt (but they didn’t).
So, in return, they offer Leonard and Penny a gift, but it’s not what they expect. Sheldon and Amy give them their own scavenger hunt and they can’t use the internet for clues because the reward is their new wifi password– which Amy has reset unbeknownst to Penny and Leonard. This plotline ends with Leonard immediately regretting all his decisions about regifting his mysterious gift.

Raj’s Epiphany
One of the sadder elements of this episode involved Raj. In the sequence, Stewart comes to Raj for dating advice since he has gone out with more women. In the sequence, Stewart conveys his anxiety about the date and Raj says, “Trust your instincts, that’s what I do.” To which Stewart responds, “And that works for you?”
Raj pauses and has a very somber expression and admits, “Actually, no. I’ve made a mess of my life and I’m all alone.” It was a heartbreaking moment that really shined a light on his feelings.
Raj then contacts his father to see if he will arrange a marriage for him with an Indian girl. His father seems reluctant at first but then agrees to help him find a companion. Towards the end of the episode, Raj announces to the rest of the crew that he is getting married and that his dad has arranged everything.
Stewart’s Big Date
Last but not least, this episode pushed the relationship between Stewart and Denise further. It was not a huge focal point of the episode but since the two of them made out at the wedding, their relationship hit a pause. That said, the dynamic between them was still flirtatious despite all of it, so Stewart finally found the courage to ask Denise on a date.
Throughout the episode we see Stewart struggle with knowing what to do on the date. This leads him to make the unfortunate decision to get a spray tan and color his hair. Howard pokes fun at his new look by saying he resembles an “Oompa Loompa.”
This story arc ends with Stewart biting the bullet and facing Denise with his silly new look. At first, she is shocked by what she sees but his bravery wins her over anyway. She commits to the date and the episode ends with her having fun at his expense.
This episode had a lot of laughs and pushed some important plotlines forward. We are finally getting some momentum on the romantic life of Raj and seeing him grapple with being the only single guy in the group.
Personally, I really hope the writers have something better up their sleeves besides an arranged marriage. Raj as a character does not deserve to settle and could do better. Also, I’m digging the relationship growth between Stewart and Denise.
