Despite fan backlash and the fact that it hasn’t even aired yet, the DC Universe series Titans has been renewed for a premature second season.

If any show needed to wait for critic and audience reception before continuing on for an additional season, Titans was the one. Fan backlash over casting, costumes, trailers, and practically everything else they found to pick on has put Titans in the “bad before it airs” category. Complaints for the show, set to air October 12, have declared it one of poor quality or, for lack of better words, “trash.”

It might be a quality series, maybe even a fantastic one, but it’s been picked on since production, and I’m honestly shocked that it’s been green-lit for a season two already, when Hannibal couldn’t get a fourth, Timeless couldn’t get a third, and Freaks and Geeks couldn’t even get a second.

DC has launched its own streaming service, because ever since Netflix came out, streaming services are like skinny jeans, everyone has to have one, no matter how uncomfortable or constricting they are. The service will debut this month with Titans, a TV show following a team of superheroes based on the popular “Teen Titans” comics and will continue on after with a lineup of additional series, including Doom Patrol (a Titans spinoff), Swamp Thing and a Harley Quinn animated series.

The renewal announcement was made by Geoff Johns at the shows world premiere in New York City, on the eve of New York Comic Con. Johns added that he and the other showrunners know exactly where the second season will go, and which characters will be introduced.

Neither Titans nor the service has yet to make their debut, but Warner Bros. must have faith in their product because they’ve given the first original series of a never before used video on demand service a second season before anyone, even critics, had the chance to see it. Fortunately, those who were lucky enough to see the first two episodes at the world premiere say it’s surprisingly good.

Titans will consist of the characters Robin (Brenton Thwaites), Raven (Teagan Croft), Starfire (Anna Diop) and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) forming a team to fight crime. Jason Todd (Curran Walters), Wonder Girl (Conor Leslie), Negative Man (Dwain Murphy), Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) and Robotman (Jake Michaels) will also appear in limited roles and the four main Titans will be joined by the heroes Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly) who will possibly get their own spinoff sooner or later.

If this news of a second season gives us anything, it’s the reassurance that whatever backstory or character recognition left out might be discussed later. Maybe even Cyborg, who will appear in Doom Patrol, will finally join the team, maybe Terra will show up to cause a landslide, and please let Slade drop by for just one episode.

It’s possible that DC Universe will do with Titans what Netflix did with their Marvel shows, in which build the second season off Doom Patrol which is set to air in 2019, meaning we’d have to watch Doom Patrol to know what’s going on with the Titans and vice a versa.

There is a possibility that the second season of Titans will explore the making of Dick Grayson’s Nightwing. In the start of Titans, Grayson is no longer working alongside Batman, Jason Todd has that honor, and is trying to get out of the Bat’s shadow. When the series was originally set to air on TNT, it reportedly focused heavily on Grayson’s transition into Nightwing, and it’s the story that the entire pilot was written on. I can easily see Titans following Grayson as he gets rid of his Robin alter ego to become Nightwing.

Season one is probably the set up of the Teen Titans and the Doom Patrol, and season two is where things will heat up with stories and heavy plots.

Season one of Titans premieres October 12 on DC Universe and will consist of twelve episodes.
