5. “Crawl Space”

Season 1, Episode 2

Why it’s a spooky delight: Bob’s Burgers definitely took some risks when the show first aired. After making their premiere about the Belchers being cannibals, they kept with the dark humor. For the second episode, it featured Bob pretending to get trapped in the wall before getting actually trapped.

More from FOX

It might seem like a funny concept, but the episode turns dark quick. Most of that comes from Bob’s lack of human interaction and him slowly losing it. He starts to hallucinate and even thinks about killing his mother-in-law. What makes this episode stand out is the nod to the horror film, The Shining.

Bob dreams he’s in the bar like Jack but the bartender is Louise’s toy, Kuchi Kopi who suggest killing his mother-in-law. The episode also ends with a nod to The Shining again when Linda’s mother pulls him out of the wall, saying “Here’s Bobby!”

It was definitely a risky move especially in the season 1. The show has evolved since then but “Crawl Space” remains one of their scariest episodes. It sort of set the tone for other future spooky episodes. “Crawl Space” had to be the first one on my list and our friends at 1428 Elm agree as they also noted how creepy and weird it is.
