Mr. Mercedes season 2, episode 7: Fell On Black Days
Mr. Mercedes ends an obvious chapter as another begins. Brady may soon be running out of exploitable, mind-control options.
Mr. Mercedes has been in the mind-control game for a few episodes now, but there may be a new player in the game. Brady (Harry Treadaway) now has competition from Dr. Babineau (Jack Huston), who gets pressured into brain surgery.
The parallels in the opening scene of “Fell On Black Days” are hilarious. While Brady makes his morning energy shake coffee is poured at Bill’s (Brendan Gleeson) to start the day. Brady’s limp body is transported to the operating table where his skull gets shaved down and drilled into. Whirring sounds of a blender full of bananas compete for attention.
The surgery
Dr. Babineau leans in, skull smoke floating past his visor. Cora (Tessa Ferrer) sits with the Chinese investors. She speaks in Chinese and they return in English. Testy and cordial, the atmosphere is tense. Progress is displayed, but the Chinese aren’t impressed. Their focus is why Brady is non-verbal. They leave, Cora follows, her Vitalta links circle the toilet, and she delivers a prolonged RBF before exiting stage left.

A moment alone with Brady allows Dr. Babs to poke and prod Brady’s exposed brain, making involuntary digits move like a serial killer marionette. Cora subsequently plans on a trip to China to smooth things over, and her husband catches her before she leaves. They are not in this together. The odd thing is, she’s so power-driven she’s willing to leave the father of her unborn child?
Without his wife, Felix seeks the aid of another woman. He visits Lou (Breeda Wool) for help. In order to entice her, money is offered to bring Brady out of his coma and determine how he’s tricking the machines.
Trip Plans
As Bill and Donna (Nancy Travis) make plans to visit Ireland, Al (Mike Starr) and his brother Reggie (Scott Anderson) grab fishing poles to get away. Al doesn’t remember days, faces 3 years for burglary, and completely realizes Brady has been in his head. Before they depart, he grabs his trusty video game. For Al, the fishing game is like social media for most teens. Before they leave, Brady via Al (Braldy?) wants to give Reggie a hair cut. Instead of hair, Braldy crops Reggie’s right ear like a Doberman. Second most brutal ear removal in film or television history.
As Reggie flails, Braldy cuts his throat with a straight razor. The second leg of Braldy’s trip is a trip across town to Bill’s house. After cooking a cheeseburger and smashing a record, he waits for Bill to arrive. Holly arrives, however, and nearly meets her fate. Lucky for her, she’s completely neurotic and decides to return to Finders Keepers to turn the coffee pot off.
Raging Bill
Brady watches his Mr. Mercedes mass murder on a black-and-white dream screen, like a murderer’s favorite home video. He’s dressed in a boxing robe with black-and-white fans from approximately the ’50s cheering him on. Very Raging Bull of him. Despite getting the jump on Bill, Braldy is only able to land a few punches. Ida enters the house and it’s enough of a distraction for Bill to grab a pistol and turn Braldy’s head into a canoe.
Who will Brady use now? Will this serve as his reason to emerge from the coma? Or will ubiquitous phablets be the gateway to more automatons?
Mr. Mercedes airs Wednesdays at 10 PM on Audience.
