The Gifted season 2, episode 3 recap: A father’s touch
By John Dotson
The latest episode of The Gifted sees a long-awaited reunion between family. But who could this be? Find out what happened on this week’s episode!
Last week’s episode of The Gifted dealt with the chaotic events of Lorna’s birth and the consequences that resulted. The episode also expanded on Andy’s conflicting role with the inner circle and him trying to gain Reeva’s trust.
At the end of that episode, we were left with a troubling cliffhanger involving baby Dawn having a severe fever and Lorna screaming for help. What exactly is wrong with her child? Well, we finally have the answer and it leads to a much-needed reunion between characters. Here is everything that went down on The Gifted season 2, episode 3!
Fathers and sons
The episode begins with a flashback six years in the past. We see Marco’s life in Columbia before being a part of the Mutant Underground, which indicates he might have had a stake in a criminal affiliation in that country.
He pulls up to a Catholic hospital run by nuns. He has a nice suit on and is carrying a decent amount of cash. Once he pays off a nun, the purpose of this scene starts to reveal itself. His dad is in this local hospital dying. The nature of Marcos visit though is not friendly despite his best efforts. He offers to move his dad to a better hospital, so he can die more comfortably but his dad refuses because Marcos works for the cartel.
The scene is supposed to convey the estranged relationship between them. His dad abandons him and his mother because as the father says, they were “demon powers”. The scene wraps with Marcos telling his father that they both know his dad will never go to heaven for what he’s done.
The sewer mutants
The last episode saw John seek the guidance from Evangeline about the “inner circle.” This week, we see him and Clarice follow-up on her information by searching for a mutant named Erg. The intel leads them to a hidden group of sewer mutants called the Morlocks.
Once John and Clarice find them, Erg will only speak to Clarice because she has something he wants, which is her ability to create portals. He agrees to give her intel on the inner circle if she will be a spy for him above ground. After this, she returns to John telling him the intel she got from Erg but hiding the fact she agreed to work for him.

Reed is a hot mess
In the previous episode, Reed and Lauren had a small confrontation over past guilt. Last night’s episode saw Kate trying to get Reed to help her. Problem is Reed is afraid to confront her again because last time it triggered his hidden power–which he is still hiding from his family.
After much deliberation with Kate, he agrees to take Lauren with him to get medical supplies so they can talk. As predicted, things do not go well. After a tense conversation in the car between Lauren and Reed, Kate calls to ask what happened to their filing cabinet.
As most of you might remember, last episode Reed’s powers were triggered due to stress and he basically disintegrated the filing cabinet. Well, the phone call from Kate pressing him on what happened then triggers him again and Reed melts the steering wheel, thus crashing the car with Lauren inside.
Once they regain themselves from the crash, they make a fast run with the medical supplies only to run into Jace who has been on the hunt for them since Atlanta. Thankfully, they get away before he has a chance to catch up. Once Reed and Lauren return, he confronts Kate with the truth finally. He tells her that he’s been hiding his powers from her, and after the initial shock, she gives him a warm forgiving embrace. For once, it seems like the Struckers are finding some peace.
Marcos and the baby
Much of the juicy part of this episode involved Marcos reuniting with his family briefly. At the top of the episode, some of the group is a little upset over the fact he put on a light show for Lorna. He decides to get away from them for a while and heads to a diner. As he tries to decompress, suddenly he is mentally bombarded by the Frost sisters. He soon realizes they are trying to lure him outside.
Long story short: They confront him, he is ready to fight, they then tell Marcos the baby is sick and only he can help. Once he arrives, he is immediately taken to Lorna and the child. Earlier in the episode, it is explained that little baby Dawn/Aurora has a severe case of jaundice. I’m not sure how the science works but when Marcos uses the glowing power from his hands, the baby is cured of the condition.
This is where things heat up. After being accosted to put the baby back down, he tries to persuade Lorna to come home. This provokes the Frost sisters into mentally kidnapping his thoughts and forcing him to leave.
Before he can get to the elevator, his rage intensifies and he tries to get back to Lorna and his child. Before he can put up a good fight, Reeva steps in and goes full super saiyan and screams his powers away. The intensity causes his own power to almost implode his left arm.
As the episode draws to a close, two things happen: 1) Marcos returns home injured, filled with anger, and desperate for retaliation. 2) Reeva Payge hints at a revolution to come. What revolution? We’ll have to wait and see.

Final thoughts
Much of the episode mainly focused on the struggle with Marcos wanting to be a good father. The juxtaposition with the intro to the events that happen later in the show are representing his fear of abandoning his own kid, the way his dad abandoned him. But what infuriates him most is the way he is being forced into the situation of not being there. It was a great growth in character for Marcos and relating his struggle to audiences.
There was also a side plot involving Jace this episode that honestly felt pointless. He is hunting down the mutant underground again on his own but honestly everytime the show stops to acknowledge his arc, it feels like the flow comes to a screeching halt. At this point, his portion of the story feels like filler and does not feel as crucial as it did in season 1. Overall though, it was still great to see Lorna and Marcos reunite briefly.
What do you think though? Were you glad to see Lorna and Marcos together again? Tell us in the comments below!
