Sometimes wishes do come true. Of course, that means there’s something unnatural happening. Supernatural Season 4, Episode 8 touches on that.

“Wishful Thinking” showed us that when wishes come true, there’s always something dangerous happening. In Supernatural Season 4, Episode 8, the Winchesters find themselves checking out a town where there’s the Invisible Man, Hulk, and much more.

Where does it all start? That’s what they need to figure out.

The case of the shower-spirit

It all starts with Sam and Dean finding out about a “shower-spirit.” Of course, it’s not a spirit at all and Candace Armstrong, who encountered this showe-spirit, says that the person knew her name and didn’t want her to tell his mom.

At the same time, someone says that he has been attacked by Bigfoot. When the brothers get to the tracks, they can’t explain them.

Meanwhile, a little girl drops off a “Sorry” note with a box of alcohol and porn. When Dean’s favorite porn magazine falls at his feet, the brothers decide to follow the girl home. Out of context that seems creepy, but it does lead them to another strange occurrence.

The teddy bear doctors and health inspectors

More from Supernatural

Sam and Dean become teddy bear doctors, after learning that the girl’s teddy is real–think Ted but more depressed than outrageously sexist and rude. The Teddy is going through an existential crisis. Audrey, the girl, explains that she’d wished her teddy was real while at Lucky Chin’s and that’s when he came to life.

Unfortunately, things don’t end well for the teddy, as he decides to blow his fur out.

Dean decides to test out the wishing well at the restaurant, wishing for a sandwich. Sure enough, the wish comes true, so the brothers have to figure out what’s going on in the well. Posing as health inspectors, they clear out the restaurant and drain the well, only to find that there’s one coin (an ancient one) stuck to the bottom.

While they drain the well, they discuss whether each other would wish to reset their lives. Sam wouldn’t, although he is tempted to ask for Lilith’s head. Understandable, really.

It’s soon clear that people are wishing for things. The shower-spirit is a teen who has wished to be invisible.

Good wishes turn back

While the wishes seem good at first, just like the luck in Supernatural Season 3, Episode 3, the wishes turn bad. Dean suffers food poisoning from the sandwich and it’s clear the coin is cursed.

That ancient coin had the face of Tiamat, a dragon deity from the Babylonian lore. This deity would bring primordial chaos and could wipe out entire towns if necessary. The Winchesters need to find the first person to cast a wish.

It doesn’t take Sam too long to find out Wes Mondale had to be the first. It doesn’t take long for Wes to admit to it all either, saying that his grandfather had found the coin during World War II. There’s a cringy part to this episode, as it brings up the idea of consent (and lack of it through a wish).

After some threats from the Winchesters, Wes removes the coin and ends the wish. This isn’t before Sam is hit by lightning (thanks to Wes’ fiancee) and Dean is beaten up by Todd, a kid with Hulk-like strength. Wes’ fiancee doesn’t even remember who Wes is.

Dean’s confession

Now that the case is over, Dean finally has a confession of his own. He finally tells Sam what he remembers from Hell. This is just a buildup to one of the most heartbreaking moments in the whole of Supernatural. We’ll get there in our rewatches, I promise!
