Supernatural Season 14 is already shaping up to be an exciting season. How will Dean cope after Michael is expelled? Cain may just play a part.

We’ve started Supernatural Season 14 strong. While there’s only been a couple of scenes with Michael!Dean, he’s already proven himself a formidable supervillain to kickstart the season. However, an interview between TVLine and Supernatural EP Eugenie Ross-Leming makes it clear that Michael isn’t the primary villain.

Eventually, Dean is going to be free from this archangel. After all, Supernatural just isn’t the same without both Winchesters together. When Dean does come back, how’s he going to deal with the trauma of everything Michael did while in control of Dean’s body?

This is where Cain comes into play. During the same interview, Ross-Leming shared that Dean won’t be as traumatized as we all think. Dean has seen his fair share of things, but he’s also been “contaminated by Cain.”

It looks like Ross-Leming is linking this back to Supernatural Seasons 9 and 10 when Dean took on the Mark of Cain. This made him do things that he wouldn’t usually do. He couldn’t stop the murderous urge inside of him, something that Cain later admitted that he couldn’t once he got the taste for killing again.

"Dean’s been contaminated by Cain. He’s a tough guy.–Eugenie Ross-Leming"

Dean managed to cope after that–and everything he did was all him. Right now, in Supernatural Season 14, we’re seeing Dean do these things but it’s not actually Dean. Michael is the one in control and he’s the one that is killing humans and building this monster army. Dean will know that he’s not the one responsible for everything.

Okay, there will be some element of him regretting that deal he made, but how was he to know that the archangel wouldn’t uphold his end of the deal? How was Dean meant to know that angels don’t abide by the respectable rules that crossroad demons do? Who would have thought that demons would be more honorable than archangels?

Cain may not be around anymore but he has still left a mark. (Initially, that pun was not intended but I love it enough to keep it). We wouldn’t have said it in Season 9 and 10, but it looks like it was the best thing that could have happened to Dean, preparing him for Michael’s hostile takeover.

However, it’s not just Cain that helps him through this. The interview concluded with this statement from Ross-Leming. Take from this what you will:

"[The ordeal with Michael] doesn’t take as big a toll because there’s something else that’s going to happen that will take a bigger toll on Dean, and he has to pay attention to that.–Eugenie Ross-Leming"
