Why I love Mary Winchester so far this season of Supernatural

Mary Winchester hasn’t had the best reception in Supernatural since coming back from the dead. Season 14 may be her strongest season so far and here’s why I already love her.

When Mary Winchester came back from the dead in Supernatural Season 11, there was a lot of hope for a major family reunion. After getting Sam back from the British Men of Letters, the SPN Family hoped that we’d see the brothers and Mary fighting side-by-side. That didn’t happen and it’s taken a while for the writers to find their footing with the character.

I’ve always said that I understood her actions in the 12th season. There was a moment that I disliked her in the 13th but this isn’t about that. Right now, it’s all about what I love about Mary Winchester in this season.

More from Supernatural

From the very first episode, I adored her scenes. We finally got a see a mother and a hunter in one. She worked with the people from the Apocalypse World, but at the same time, she looked out for Sam. You could see the worry in her eyes, the concern as she knew Sam wasn’t looking after himself.

However, it wasn’t really until the car scene with Sam that I really appreciated her attitude. She did seem a little too optimistic at first, but then she explained why. It was suddenly easy to see where Sam and Dean have got their over-optimistic attitudes from. When Hell is just around the corner, the two have tried to keep the faith; usually only one of them at a time, annoying the other.

It was in this explanation that we got confirmation that she really does care. After a year of trying to find her place 30+ years after her death and then a year fighting alongside hunters who have been stuck in the aftermath of an apocalypse, Mary Winchester finally has the chance to fight alongside her sons and she is determined to get her eldest back.

There’s still more to come and time for Mary to develop. I just hope the Supernatural writers have decided to finally make her a mother to her sons.
