Mom season 6, episode 5 recap: A death shakes things up
This week on Mom, after the sudden death of her husband, Marjorie’s upbeat and unchanged demeanor worries Christie and the gang.
For Christie’s graduation gift, Bonnie used Adam’s credit card to buy three of them tickets to see Wicked in San Francisco. But, since Adam didn’t want to go, Bonnie and Christie decide to take Marjorie, who has been kept busy with her ailing husband, Victor.
During intermission Marjorie gets a call informing her that Victor had another stroke, so the three head back to Napa Valley. Unfortunately, Victor dies.
Before a meeting a few days later, all the women are talking about how worried they all are for Marjorie. Jill, who went to check on Marjorie that morning, says she didn’t even answer the door. But then Marjorie struts in with a plate of macaroons and a chipper attitude. Saying she was out running errands, which included buying the aforementioned pastries and the new sweater she was wearing, Marjorie seems to be completely unfazed.
Over tea with her sponsor Nora, Christie shares her concerns about Marjorie. Nora, being the fountain of wisdom that she is, tells Christie she can’t control Marjorie’s grieving, and especially can’t control whether or not she chooses to drink because of it.
After the funeral, the whole gang heads back to Marjorie’s. Without shedding a tear the entire time, the new widow continues to be in control of her emotions. Marjorie eventually tells everyone Victor wanted her to spread his ashes at the apple orchard he proposed to her in. Christie, thinking this would be a great opportunity to get Marjorie to properly grieve, suggests they do it as a group.

On the way to the orchard, Christie, Bonnie, Jill, Wendy, Marjorie, and Tammy smoke Cuban cigars that Victor left behind until. It was a sweet moment until Christie, who didn’t know she wasn’t supposed to be inhaling, gets really sick. Once they get to the spot they discover the orchard has since been replaced by a Costco. Laughing about it, Marjorie truly gets a kick out of her bad luck.
Inside the megastore, Christie and Marjorie talk over some concession stand hotdogs. After Christie reveals she thinks Marjorie is holding in her emotions, the latter gets rather upset and retreats to the car where she won’t be bossed around concerning how she feels.
On the ride home everyone is texting each other trying to find out what Christie said to make Marjorie so mad. But once they get to talking, it is Wendy who had the sage advice that made Marjorie’s reaction make sense. Some people do all the grieving of a loved ones passing before they even die, so during the long build up to Victor’s second stroke Marjorie must’ve done just that.
Back at her house, Marjorie decides to keep Victor’s ashes on the counter till she’s ready to part with him. And, once she starts petting her deceased husband’s favorite cat, Marjorie’s emotions get the best of her. The episode ends with the women hugging and consoling their grieving friend.
What did you think of this week’s episode? That was a shocking death, wasn’t it? Christie just couldn’t stop worrying about her friend, even though it made things worse in the end. I hope Marjorie bounces back soon. What do you think will happen next? Let us know in the comments section or hit us up with a tweet @HiddenRemote
