When the Mercedes Killer of Mr. Mercedes walks out of bed after over a year in a coma, it’s safe to say lives are about to be changed.

Brady (Harry Treadaway) killed his brother, got beaten by his father, and got hand-jobs from his mother. Suffice to say his life was never going to be normal. Mr. Mercedes takes an odd turn, however, as Brady may actually surprise more than ever before.

Meanwhile, Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) has to prepare for life after Brady’s coma. And the repercussions of what a new Brady means in his life.

Brady’s out.

How in the hell can Brady walk after being in a coma for over a year? What about atrophy? Montez (Maximiliano Hernández) and Bill want answers (so do I). Babineau (Jack Huston) wants a lawyer so he doesn’t have to spill the beans.

Bill has nothing to lose; so, he decides to interrogate the good doctor with a sock full of ball bearings. Treatments, prognoses, information needs to come quickly or a quick reenactment of Bad Boys is in order.

Babineau has no real answers. It’s a guess. Could be the meds, could be a miracle. Some coma patients wake up and speak foreign languages. Others embark on a mission to kill a group of assassins.

Stop #1

Brady randomly walks to the Babineau mansion where Cora Babineau (Tessa Ferrer) is giving her husband a pep talk. He believes prison is on the horizon, but Cora thinks their riches and fame – not to mention support and stock options from the Chinese – will keep him out of prison. All that doesn’t matter as soon as Brady walks in with a stun gun.

Good news for the Babineau family, Brady needs the experimental drug to continue. To survive. The drugs are only in great supply in China. For now, however, they need to access the limited domestic supply.

Stop #2

Who expects a stop at the hospital? Straight out of The Fugitive playbook! But since we’re borrowing from movies, Brady lets Cora know he’s Never Been Kissed. Well, other than his mother of course. A reluctant peck on the lips leads to Brady pleading with Cora for a real kiss. One that will last him for years, that will stay in his memory. She leans in an absolutely soul kisses him. Brady’s reaction:

Wish fulfilled, Brady wants to be captured. He turns himself over to save his own life. Ulterior motives may exist.

Bill preps.

Realizing the danger to his loved ones, Bill gathers the three most important people in his life aside from his wife (who is in Seattle). Jerome (Jharrel Jerome), Ida Silver (Holland Taylor), Holly (Justine Lupe) gather at Finders Keepers, and Bill lays it all out. The P.I. business is closed, and everyone should go in hiding. Ida, however, thinks she’s safe because she often bought ice cream from Brady.

Post-coercion, Bill straps up like Rambo. He gets a massive knife, a gun, plenty of ammo, and prepares for the attack. He also warns Lou (Breeda Wool) that Brady may be en route. That danger is short-lived, however, when they learn of the hospital capitulation.

Bill is the weak link?

After Brady’s confession, and subsequent revelations about his abuse while comatoseBill stalked Sadie McDonald, and she committed suicide. Bill stalked Al, he died. Evidence was withheld and Bill’s girlfriend’s died. Cutting off Brady’s air-way was another strike. Pulling a gun on the teen in his backyard makes things look worse. Hitting Babineau with the ball bearings probably wasn’t the right thing to do either. As a material witness, he’s a dumpster fire. Furthermore, what they have on Bill is enough to prosecute.

Mr. Mercedes ends with Bill sitting down in a jail cell. A familiar voice speaks up, and Bill realizes he’s adjacent to Brady’s cell.
