When Maggie goes out late one night, you know it’s not going to end up well for her. Just what happens to the AU hunter and are the Winchesters really only dealing with vampires in Supernatural Season 14, Episode 5?

There’s a rule in Supernatural. You don’t go out late on your own. Maggie really should understand that rule considering the world she comes from, but she heads off to a family crypt. It’s not surprising when she’s attacked by a monster.

Meanwhile, Dean decides it’s time to get out of his room, hearing Sam act as the leader for the group. While he pokes fun at elements like cute hunter check-ins, he is clearly proud of his little brother. Although, he’s also worried.

Quite honestly, the hunter check-ins are a great idea. It’s possible to know early if something happens. The hunters also wear body cams that upload directly to a server, which means it’s possible to see footage of the attack. Maybe I take it back that Maggie headed out alone — she left a trail to follow thanks to Sam’s instinct and leadership skills.

The Winchesters head out for Maggie

More from Supernatural

The brothers head to the family property that Maggie was last at. Pretending to be from the Historical Protection Society, they two manage to make their way to see the owner, where Bobby and Mary are also posing as the HPS. That sneak peek is just as awesome in the episode.

They actually speak to the nurse, who takes the four hunters to the owner. He’s attached to machines and in a coma and he looks exactly like the creature that attacked Maggie. We get a flip to Maggie, who is chained up with blood being taken from her.

Now it’s time for the hunters to figure out what they’re dealing with. It’s not a ghoul, a demon, or a shifter. What could it be?

Bobby knocks Sam’s confidence

While we’ve looked at Sam proud to see him be a hunter, Bobby doesn’t view him that way. He’s angry that Sam sent off Maggie on a hunt she wasn’t ready for and now it’s possibly got her killed. There’s something else going on and Mary shares that she hasn’t figured out what it is yet. Bobby has walls and won’t talk to her, and Mary isn’t sure she is ready to help him.

Sam and Mary head off in search for what they’re dealing with, while Bobby and Dean head off in a different direction. Sam and Mary have an awesome chance to talk about Bobby’s situation, giving Sam the perfect chance to offer his mom some advice: talk to Bobby and find out what’s behind the walls. During the talk, they burned clothing and IDs on the ground. They’re fake IDs from another hunter.

Meanwhile, Bobby and Dean find a hut. As Dean walks in and finds the dead hunter, Bobby runs off after a man he’s just seen. In the hut, Dean is attacked by the creature. When he stabs it, it turns to ash.

Back at the house, the owner’s daughter is attacked by a vampire-like creature.

Catching everyone up

It’s time to catch everyone up on the situation. Bobby remains with the car, so Mary rushes outside. That leaves Sam and Dean to figure out what is going on. Sam theorizes that the house’s owner is making the monsters come to life.

Dean and the daughter have a heart to heart, as the daughter shares her daddy issues and sad childhood. Dean gets his Elsa vibe on, sharing he tries to “let it go” every single day. Someone has been watching way too much Frozen.

While that is happening, Sam heads up to the attic, where the daughter was originally heading because she thought she heard rats. He finds Maggie, chained up and a vampire jumps out. Sam stabs the creature and it turns to ash just like the other one.

Meanwhile, Mary goes in search for Bobby, who is now missing. He’s gone for a wander in the woods and, of course, comes up against a man with burned out eyes. “Hey, Dad,” the guy says after Bobby calls him Daniel. Bobby knows he can’t be real, but he’s there.

Daniel tells Bobby that “they crucified” him, but before he can kill Bobby, Mary shows up. Just as it looks like Mary is going to be killed, Bobby forces Daniel off her and then stabs him. Daniel disappears in the ash.

Something is clearly bringing nightmares to life. Dean realizes that the owner is getting a blood transfusion and realizes something is going on with the nurse. Remembering he was hooked up to the blood and in chains before, Dean realizes that the nurse is a djinn.

Learning more about Michael’s plans

It turns out the djinn thought Dean was Michael and is disappointed to hear that’s not the case. The djinn is attacking hunters because that’s what Michael told him to do. Unlike other djinns, this one has been reading minds for nightmares and bringing them to life.

As the djinn attacks Dean and reads his nightmares, the djinn is shocked and shouts “you.” It’s enough for Dean to get the upper hand and the djinn shares there are more traps out there. Michael has set up dozens to take down the monsters.

In the end, Dean is able to save the property owner and Maggie is brought back home alive. Bobby and Mary get back to the bunker and are able to talk. In the Apocalypse World, Bobby had a son and they hunted together. When the angels took him, Bobby never learned what happened to him. The two need to get away for some R&R.

Worried about Mary heading off? Don’t! Mary is profusely apologetic and makes it clear she’s only half a day’s drive away. This time the Winchester brothers are fully supportive of her going.

The Winchesters have their own problem, anyway. They need to call every single hunter they know to make sure they “use the buddy system.” While Dean knows it isn’t all his fault, he’s still struggling.
