She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is Netflix’s newest animated addition. A reboot of an 80’s classic, the new could quickly take place of the old.

Cartoons from the 1980’s are a mixed bag. There are some beloved ones such as Ducktales and Jem, while others are forgotten such as Dungeons & Dragons and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! One of the biggest and most popular cartoons was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Considering how popular the show was, the network was quick to capitalize. After premiering in 1983, He-Man’s twin sister, She-Ra got her own show. It premiered in 1985 as a companion to the series geared toward girls. The series only ran for 2 seasons and followed She-Ra leading the rebellion to overthrow Hordak and the Evil Horde.

Sadly, She-Ra never lived up to the popularity of her twin brother. Regardless, it seems like She-Ra does have some staying power. In mid-November, Netflix is releasing a reboot of the series entitled She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It’s an obvious nod to the older series, but there are 3 main reasons why it could work this time.

Currently, there isn’t an action-based cartoon featuring a female lead character. It was popular in the 80’s and 90’s but not so much now. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has the chance to capitalize on that market. Rarely do we see an action-based cartoon with female characters. The Powerpuff Girls was a major hit in the 2000’s along with the original She-Ra so there’s definitely a market for it.

The second reason is pretty simple, but it gets glossed over a lot. The emphasis for the new series is about them being heroes and not being sexualized. When She-Ra first premiered in 1985, she was overly sexual for a cartoon character. This version gives her a strong and heroic body. It created a small backlash with male fans of the original series but seems to have died down fo

r now. Either way, this new version is truer to her as a character versus the older version.

The last reason has less to do with the show and more with Netflix. Netflix has truly hit the jackpot with its recent cartoon releases. Most notably, Voltron: Legendary Defender has gained leagues of fans, both young and old. It features well-known characters but still introduces new ones and brings new depth to an old favorite.

The same can be said about She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power have the potential to be huge. With a unique art style, new characters and a talented cast, it will depend on the fans. As long as fans watch and support the show, it will be successful. That being said, do you plan on tuning into She-Ra and the Princesses of Power?
