Dean and Sam are on uniquely different hunts, but they were needed more for their friends than the monsters at-large in this week’s episode of Supernatural.

Sam and Dean were on separate hunts this week on Supernatural, helping along a few friends in the process. Sam and Charlie took one case, while Dean and Jack took the other.

Dean took Jack on a hunt, and they did not disappoint. They had serious moments where Dean and Jack had to take down what was essentially a zombie, but Jack telling Dean he needs the sex talk was well worth the episode.

Those two have great comedic timing off each other, Jack calling Dean and ‘old man’ was definitely one of the highlights of Supernatural Season 14, Episode 6, titled “Optimism.” It also provided a character for later in the season as trouble for Jack with the necromancer Harper still in the wind and her sights set on the young angel.

But the truth is the episode worked so well because Supernatural is at its best when it shows the connections between the characters. Yes, there are zombies and fly boys that need to be killed, but there is no show without the love between them all.

While Dean and Jack were having a little more fun on their hunt, with Jack learning how to court a woman, Sam and Charlie had more serious business. Charlie explained how she didn’t plan to hunt anymore and this was her last case. That didn’t sit well with Sam, who apparently loves fidget spinners. Sam keeps thinking of AU Charlie as their Charlie and forgets she doesn’t have the same experiences that are in his memory.

Yet, Sam knows how to get into someone’s soul, knowing exactly what they need to hear. He talked about Charlie’s sense of belonging, needing to be with people.

Even their Charlie had run away at times, and she always found her way back because people inherently need each other. And to get through the dark times, it helps when there is a lifeline on the other end.

I liked this version of Charlie. She’s been through so much having seen her world and the people she loved destroyed by Michael and Lucifer’s war, but she’s pragmatic with a hint of sarcasm. She actually reminds me a lot of Dean Winchester, which is probably why she and Sam work so well together.

Unfortunately, the episode ended on a rough note for the characters. Jack’s health woes have finally been discovered when he had a coughing fit in front of Dean. But this was the worst fit yet as blood dripped from his nose and he passed out from whatever is ailing him.

And he still didn’t get the sex talk. It was another good episode of Supernatural – let’s keep them coming this year.

Supernatural is more than Sam and Dean, but family and community too. dark. Next
