ABC renews Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for seventh season

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn’t even premiered its sixth season yet, but ABC has surprised all with an extremely early renewal. The team will be back for a seventh season.

Let’s be honest; this was news none of us expected to hear, right? Especially not this early. ABC has shocked all by renewing Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a seventh season.

There are a few reasons this announcement is surprising. The main one is that the sixth season hasn’t even premiered yet. After a ratings drop during the fifth season, ABC pushed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 to the summer. It’s running for a 13-episode season during the middle of 2019.

Yet, without even an episode airing, ABC has picked up the show for the seventh season, according to Deadline. Details aren’t clear just yet, except that it will likely have a 13-episode season. There are high chances that the show will also premiere in the summer of 2020.

This suggests ABC has high hope that the show will do well as a summer-billed show. Ratings get to be a tad lower during this time of year and it helps to keep interesting, new content on the network when most other shows take a break.

But still, why the early renewal? It’s likely to do with the actor contracts. They’ll be coming to an end and ABC will need to either renew them now or let them drop. Keeping the show off until the summer has given the actors a little breathing room in a way.

Technically, the renewal shouldn’t be that surprising. Season 6 was never billed as the final season and never envisioned as it either. So, there were always going to be talks of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7. Those have just had to be pushed up with excellent news for the fans.
