‘Hey, Archie’ dig at the Archie comics or Riverdale on Supernatural?
‘Hey, Archie!’ Dean shouted during Supernatural Season 14, Episode 6. What exactly was this a joke towards?
Supernatural has always been one to poke fun and have a laugh with other fandoms. We’ve had mentions of Twilight in the past, literally crossover connections with Scooby-Doo, and mentions of various horror movies. But what was the Episode 6 mention, “Hey, Archie” aimed at?
Let me point out that the digs haven’t been malicious. They’re a fun way to add in pop culture and connect with fans of other shows and movies. They’re also used for Dean’s love of all things pop culture and this reference was right up his alley.

It was likely the Archie comics that Dean was referring to. Who didn’t read the strips in the paper? Dean certainly would have growing up since John would have always had newspapers around to find cases. Then when Dean was alone, he’d look through papers himself and likely spend some time reading the comic strips for a laugh.

However, the writers would know many fans would connect to another Archie: the one from Riverdale. Based on the Archie comics, Riverdale is another CW show, airing on Wednesdays. It used to follow the Winchesters during the first season and is in second place out of all CW shows.
The zombie in “Optimism” closely resembled Archie in Riverdale. While Archie in the comics always wore a letterman jacket, it was the red hair that will have made many fans think of the CW series. However, chances are that Dean wouldn’t know of the series. It took him long enough to learn about Game of Thrones!
