#FF: Why is the Impala so important to the Winchesters on Supernatural
She’s not been a focal point much this season of Supernatural, but Baby is one of the most important members of the SPN Family. Just why is the Impala so important to the Winchesters?
If you’ve only just started watching Supernatural, you may not quite understand the importance of Baby. The Impala, which has been rebuilt from scratch by Dean’s own hands, is certainly one of the most important characters on the show. As we get ready for a road trip episode next week, it’s time to look back at the importance of the car.
Baby is far more than just a car. In fact, call her “just a car” to Dean and he will rip your head off. The Impala is the only woman in Dean’s life who he’s remained completely faithful to and cared deeply for without wavering.

Baby has always been faithful to the family. While she’s been ragged across the backcountry and crashed into multiple times, she has been there for the Winchesters brothers. When they’ve needed to get away, she hasn’t failed.
If Dean had to rely on anyone, it’s going to be the Impala. Humans fail, but cars certainly don’t!
She’s the home they’ve always had
In another fandom I’m in, there’s a discussion of what home and family mean. Supernatural has always given us the meanings of both of these. The Impala is the home the Winchesters, especially Dean, have always had.
When they’ve not had money for a motel room, the Winchesters have been able to sleep in the Impala. You can tell that she’s witnessed plenty of loving from various members of the family, including John and Mary Winchester.
She’s cared for and delivered the promise of a roof when needed. She is the home on the road and that will never change.

She’s family
The SPN Family isn’t just made up of humans. Baby is the family that can’t talk but she can certainly share how she feels. Over the years, Dean has cared more deeply for the Impala. After the telling off from his dad about how dirty she was and after Dean rebuilt her from scratch, she has routinely been cared for.
When Dean went to Hell, Dean made sure the keys went to someone he loved. When he was stuck in purgatory, he didn’t have to worry about his brother looking after Baby.
Sam may not want to admit it, but he cares just as much for the car as Dean. She is family to them — the constant family who will always be there.
