On this, the 21st day of Sam-mas, which is also #FlashbackFriday, let’s flash all the way back to Season 1 of Supernatural and take a look at our first season of Sam Winchester.

It’s been 14 years since Supernatural debuted and we were introduced to Sam Winchester for the first time.  Since then his character has gone through a complete transformation, which we would expect in a character. However, let’s take some time to use our #FlashbackFriday to remember Sam as we met him.

We first met Sam as an infant as his mother is killed by a demon in his nursery. And then we promptly flashed forward to him in Stanford. He had a girlfriend! He was studying to be a lawyer.

He seems to have his life together, until Dean shows up and brings him back into the family business. After the hunting trip, Sam returns to find his girlfriend killed by the same demon who killed his mom.

More from Supernatural

A large part of Season 1 Sam has him slowly realizing that he is becoming his father. Obsessed with revenge against the demon who killed the woman he loved, his goal is to hunt long enough to seek revenge and kill the Yellow-Eyed Demon.

Another large arc for Sam in Season 1 is the emergence of his powers. Remember his powers? He starts off by just getting some headaches, and then slowly they develop into him getting premonitions of people before they die. The powers don’t play a huge part in the first season, but this season lays the groundwork for future seasons.

Throughout the season we watch as Sam becomes more and more obsessed with finding the demon. Dean, about three-quarters through the season points out that Sam is becoming more and more like their dad. And reminds him that there is more to life than revenge, like family.

At the end of the first season, Sam finally gets to confront the Yellow-Eyed Demon, however, he does so as the demon has possessed his dad. When Sam has the shot to kill the demon, he doesn’t, choosing family over revenge.

For only one season, we see a lot of growth in Sam’s character. He’s able to put his family over revenge, something his dad was never able to do, and he goes from reluctantly hunting, to being completely on board.
