25 Days of Sam-mas Day #23: It’s time for Sam to be more involved in the lore
Supernatural brings plenty of lore to the series. In the earlier episodes, Sam Winchester was far more integral to the storylines. It’s time for that to happen now.
Think back to Supernatural‘s earlier seasons. The focus on the brothers was somewhat balanced. While we got Dean’s connection to the angels, we spent a long time on Sam’s visions, his connection to the Yellow-Eyed Demon, and his connection to Lucifer. Over the years, that’s disappeared a lot and for Day #23 of the 25 Days of Sam-mas, it’s time to look at his need to be involved more in the lore.
The last time I remember Sam being a crucial part of the series was back in Season 8. He was the one that took on the trials, much to Dean’s dislike. And even that was more to explain some of the atrocity that was Sam walking away from Dean, who had disappeared with Castiel after killing the Leviathans.

Since then, Sam Winchester has mostly been there to support his brother. He’s been overlooked when there was ca hance to really focus on him being part of the lore or the overall story. Just one storyline that immediately comes to mind is Supernatural Season 13, Episode 8, titled “The Scorpion and the Frog.”

In that storyline, the demon needed someone who had been to Hell and returned. Dean was chosen as the one who was needed, but both Winchester brothers have been to Hell and back. If you count it by souls instead of physical bodies, Sam was there longer, as his soul was stuck there when we was returned.
Yet the writers completely overlooked it. There was a possible explanation, but the writers couldn’t take 30 seconds to add it in.
Over the years, we’ve seen Dean get the Mark of Cain, become Deanmon, get possed by an archangel for a storyline that takes more than half an episode, and get some of the most development. There’s a chance for Sam to step up as a leader, but to do that, he needs to be more of an integral part of the series — and not just be one of the two pillars holding up the series, because right now that’s all he seems to be.
I get the feeling that should Lucifer come back, Nick is going to be more integral for the archangel instead of Sammy. That’s not the way it should be!
Even when there was a chance to make him integral in Jack’s storyline, Dean swooped in and took a lot of it. Dean was the one that took Jack on the road trip to experience life, while Sam stayed at the bunker and read books.
When Sam has been a major part of the storyline, it’s been because he’s been taken by a demon or killed. Look at Supernatural Season 13, Episode 11 or Episode 21. Both episodes involved Dean having to or trying to save his brother. We have a chance to see it happen the other way around. Now is the time to give Sam more to do.
It’s time to divide the storylines like what happened in the earlier seasons. Eric Kripke got it very right, so can we go back to some of that, please?
