As a New Year gift, Freeform released the pilot of Good Trouble a week early on the network’s app, Xfinity, and on Hulu. The question remains: Does the spin-off have the same heart as The Fosters?

Freeform surprised all the fans of The Fosters by releasing the pilot of Good Trouble on their network and on Hulu. Watching the pilot was pretty good, although something did feel off.

As we all know by now, the creators and executive producers of Good Trouble have stated that the spin-off will be sexier and edgier. Callie and Mariana are now adults and the storylines can be more mature.

One of the executive producer’s of the show, Joanna Johnson, told Variety:

"Johnson admits that writing stories for this version of Callie and Mariana is “freeing” — because “the girls have matured, so the storylines can be more mature.” Additionally, the storytelling on “Good Trouble” is not told in a completely linear fashion, instead using certain lines of dialogue to trigger flashback moments for the characters, offering more insight into certain relationships for the audience.“Instead of always having to come up with twists in the story, which can often force you into making too many soapy turns, how about starting at the end of a story or in the middle, at an intriguing plot point, and making the audience wonder, ‘Wow. How did we get here?’” she explains."

I like the old innocent style way as we’ve seen on The Fosters. What I mean by that is that the show felt like a family program. It didn’t need to be edgy or sexy. You have the parents and five kids in the same house.

While I was watching Good Trouble, the production team has upgraded the love and sex department as it’s more mature than its mother show. But will audiences feel connected to it the same way as The Fosters?

I don’t like the way the creators are using certain lines of dialogue to trigger flashback moments during the new show. I love linear fashion as I understand the show better and it doesn’t confuse me between the back and forth during an episode. I’m not used to it and it throws me off. I would love if they can switch the format back, but unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.

I’m a family person, so the too mature storylines seem a bit too much for me. Regardless, the fans of The Fosters will love this show.

I loved the pilot and I’ll have to get used to these storylines. It is the same old Callie and Mariana that we all know and love which is fantastic. The emotional moments are great, and it reminds you of The Fosters.

Callie got right into it after liking Gael, but then she stopped after finding out that Mariana had a crush on him. Callie didn’t want a boy to get in between her and Mariana. What happened during the pilot was great though, and you’ll find out what exactly I’m talking about when you watch it.

The synopsis for Good Trouble, Season 1, Episode 1 is below, per Freeform:

"We pick up where “The Fosters” ended, 5 years in the future, with sisters Callie & Mariana graduating college and moving to downtown Los Angeles. Living with a group of friends in a community style living space, Callie and Mariana navigate the beginning of their careers—Callie clerking for a conservative judge and Mariana in the male-dominated tech space. The sisters and best friends will navigate love, sex, and the complicated relationships that come with living in a new city in your 20s."

What I need to get used to is Stef and Lena not being regulars on the show. As I said before, they were the fountain of The Fosters so it’s going to feel different.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the episodes unfold. Also, the end of the pilot was priceless. I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t seen the episode yet, but you may laugh. I will say the way Mariana reacted towards Callie was funnier after what we have witnessed occur at the end of the pilot.

I grade the pilot a B+. Let’s see how future episodes do, but I am a loyal fan of both The Fosters and Good Trouble, so I’m not going anywhere.

If you’ve watched the pilot, let us know what you thought of it.

Good Trouble premieres January 8, 2019, on Freeform at 8/7c.
